raising animal genre(non pokemon) appreciation thread?
yeah, other than JRPG, i spent countless hours on digimon and monster rancher also harvest moon...
I love digimon one the most, the graphic was so ahead of its time imho though
want to play monster rancher 2 on ePSXe but it is impossible to generate the monster due to its CD-to-monster mechanism

No, no it isn't.

Use ePSXe 1.6, 1.7 doesn't work with loading from the CD drive (or loading up other isos for that matter) for monsters.

man i was amazed by this monster generating shit when i had this game. my dad had a huge CD collection so i remember grabbing huge stacks and sitting slack jawed while monsters popped out of them.

how did that shit actually work anyway? did it actually draw on any of the data, or was it just a gimmick with a random generator

Some type of coding on the disk. Specific ones were wrote into the game, so it knew when you put in that Pulp-Fiction soundtrack for a specific monster as apposed to using your copy of Final Fantasy VII.

Last I played it (emulated) a lot of the CDs/ISOs I used didn't produce the monsters they were suppose to. This might be because the data needed wasn't there where it was looking for it or the versions of those CDs/ISOs aren't the same as the ones set to produce the monsters.

Or use PCSX-R, essentially it's a version of ePSXe that's still updated regularly, has less overall emulation issues with games, and it uses the same BIOS and plugin setup from ePSXe. AFAIK all the plugins work with both, and you can even transfer your saves and savestates over by just copy pasting the files.

You can find a link to the newest version at:
http://emulation-general.wikia.com/wiki/Recommended_Emulators

But if ePSXe works for you, don't worry about it.

Hnngh, fucking love the Monster Rancher franchise (even MR3 has its strong points and EVO was...well, it was EVO) and am glad to see a thread for MR and other creature raising games.

Between Digimon World and MR1 and 2, so many countless hours and replays and alternate files have been sunk into them. What're your favorite ones, guys?

I love PM2. My number one "I mustn't play it because it's such a timesink" game. Yes, I find it more addicting that Civ, for example.

I love how the endeing were generated. One of my daughter turned out to be a dancing teacher. She started as a dancer, but she didn't have enought stamina or constitution so had to resort to teaching. She also married a successful high class merchant.

Too bad none of the sequels were translated.

It reads the track times and mixed it with a data table. For rare monsters they programmed in the specific track time of the intended CD

My pick is the first. 3 is great but kind of generic and has HORRIBLE backtracking and encounter rates and i couldn't like 2 at all, dungeon crawler without an ounce of charm.
