This game made me sad. I used to buy issues of Newtype even though I couldn't read Japanese, I would look through the pictures of all these games we weren't getting.

And I would salivate over pics of Popolocrois. The art was beautiful and the in game graphics looked inctedibly charming. I lamented that games like that were doomed to stay in Japan. Then many years later it got ported to PSP and someone decided to translate it.

So I grab a copy, dive in and wow. Even by jrpg standards it was stupidly easy and so boring that all the charm in the world couldn't make it playable.

You're sad because you're gay.

Wouldn't I be sad because I'm not gay enough to enjoy it? Or are you saying I'm sad because I'm happy and your post is a kind of Buddhist meditation?

Yep all of the PoPo games have been disappointing, yet I've bought every single one except the ps2 game. The worst of them was the latest, the story of seasons crossover shit.

Are the anime any good?

You do know the PSP port was mutilated beyond recognition, don't you.
It tries to cram an entire series worth of plot in one game, like those shitty 12-episode animes so numerous lately.

Series is baby's JRPG, SNES underdeveloped port edition.
First was actually challenging.
It has a lot of charm, but too many duds (Poporogue, PS2, PSP)
They tried repeatedly localizing it (1, 2, 4) without success, even so far to have official English titles.

Basically there's a manga, and then an unreleased idea for an adaptation with a slightly different grander story (Pietro's mother, Narcia) in a more fleshed out universe.
They did an animated pilot for an anime, but it went nowhere.
Sony bought the rights, had a developer adapt the full story as videogames (1 and 2).
The 1998 anime is a filler story about side events happening in the older continuity, but still really good.
Same team (I.G.) who did the anime FMVs in-game.

Then they did some games on PS2 set after a time skip starring the second generation.
Game was average at best and a disappointment.
Another 2003 anime tried to retell and salvage its plot.
If you're really a fan of the series and were disappointed with the PS2 game, anime might be cathartic for you a bit, but it's nowhere near as good as any works from the older continuity.

3DS Harvest Moon spinoff, and the newer one by Sony on phones (because there's no Vita to release it on anymore) are set in the older continuity. First one isn't bad, makes up for Xseed not localizing the last Story of Seasons 3DS game (a SECOND 3ds remake of "a story of two towns", more features and less bugs than Natsume's), looks really good but is different.

I didn't, no. Not sure if I'm happy that the Japanese didn't get a terrible version or irate that I'll never get to play it. Apathetic at this point I suppose.

Maybe I'll learn how to hack games and translate it in the future just for you, Anon. If I ever do I'll post it here, but as far as coding ability i only know some python and know jack shit about rom hacking. Got the japanese down for the most part though, just have to expand my vocabulary bank.

Honestly I wouldn't waste your time, I'd still likely get bored half way through and never touch it again.

It's sadly not a beginner's project.
The game pulls the font directly from the system's BIOS. There's an English font too but it's ugly. You would need to rewrite all of that programming. Doable (after all romhackers did it with Clock Tower 1, Castlevania SOTN retranslated) but a pain.
In fact the official developers said something about its programming preventing a timely localization that could have meant just that.

I'm interested if you ever do it.
