I just beat Kenseiden today. Killed every warlock and just didn't finish the last dojo because I thought I wasn't going to beat the game but it turns out shit gets way easier after the first levels since the ammount of upgrades I had made me almost invincible. This game was impossible for me as a kid.

Raddest peripheral is the Light Phaser. I had loads of fun with it.

Undoubtedly Sega shittiest console.

Inferior controller to NES with fewer buttons and worse Dpad.

Inferior audio chip to NES (only 1/6 of games supported FM synth and what's worse, FM synth was only available in Japan yet quite a few of those 1/6 game were only released in NA/EU regions)

Inferior video quality to NES with really shitty composite that is not only blurrier than NES but has disgusting jailbars.

Inferior game library to NES with 1/6 as many games (318 vs 1850)

Born in 87, I didn't know the Master System even existed until after the Dreamcast had been released.

I admit I don't own one, but I bought a Power Base Converter (which thankfully fits on my CDX) and a Master System controller.

Truth be told it's a touch difficult to find anything that seems legitimately interesting on the Master System. I have Phantasy Star, which I WANT to play but it's very difficult to stay invested in it. AfterBurner is so choppy it's hard to tell whatever's going on. Hang-On is alright, but Super Hang-On is so much better. Beyond those games I can't seem to find much that interests me enough to want to buy it.

colour palette is wider but inferior resolution (256x196 vs 256x240 of the NES) and framerate/scrolling was often worse

I just finished Castle of Illusion. Very fun but easy. It took me around an hour and a half and I spent 2 continues. It gets a bit harder at the last level but even so the level isn't long so getting back to the point you died is a breeze since there isn't much to memorize. As a 6 year old I could just get to the dragon. Closure at last. I love how detailed Mickey's sprites are. Even when he stands over a slope his feet actually fits the ground properly. The backgrounds suck, though.
Now all I gotta do is choose between Lucky Dime Caper and Psycho Fox for more nostalgia overload but I'll do that tomorrow.

Just played an hour of The Lucky Dime Caper. I'm enjoying it so far, the graphics are pretty and I'm digging the music. Donald sprites are very detailed with lots of animations, for instance, in the hot level he sweats, in the ice level he shivers, when he's standing on an edge he does that almost falling down stuff like sanic and he also has an idle animation. The backgrounds doesn't seem that bad either. The game is way harder than castle of illusion too.

There are some flaws but they're minor and don't take away my enjoyment of it. When Donald stands on an edge and goes into the almost falling down animation, to get away from it he moves slower. Not a big deal some might say it's realistic but I find it somewhat annoying. When you kill an enemy and it drops an item, you can't grab it in the air. You need to wait for it to land to pick it up so if you kill and enemy over a bottomless pit you can't grab it. Another thing is there are some enemies that freeze the screen and you can only proceed after they're killed. The problem is they're usually placed in the far right of the screen and after you kill them you need to move all the way back to the center otherwise the screen will scroll to the right with your character facing it.

Continues are infinite so I don't think I'll have any problems beating it.

The music on the final stage is really awesome. I remember some 25 years ago, my brother finished this game and I only watched - I was too young (I was 4 or 5 at the time) for some of the parts, like that auto-scrolling part in Peru/Mexico (I forgot the name of the stage) and also that part in the volcano where the lava drops on the ice cubes.

When I was younger I couldn't get very far either. At least I got this game basically for free since I rented it and never returned. They called my house a month later, talked to my mom and she told me they asked for it and that I could return it for free. The truth is I lost it somewhere in the living room and then found it some time later. I think it was behind the sofa.

>>4853441
Could be either Peru or Bolivia since the map isn't very accurate, but the enemies attire is Incan no doubt.
There are 2 auto-scrollers and I think they're the same. The problem is, since the last one is right before the boss and if you get hit you lose your weapon. I couldn't for the life of me kill the statues without a weapon. Jumping over the boss' head is fucking hard specially when there's just a single one left.
The part where the lava drops on the ice cubes is hard because of what I said earlier about donald's animation when standing over edges. I lost 2 or 3 lives in this screen.

One of my favorite light gun games.

Beginning is easy and it gets nicely tougher through the stages.

Thinking about it i don't think I've seen a gamequite like it

I think laser ghost is somewhat alike as in a character moves in the screen and you have to kill the enemies trying to get to her.

Asterix and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World.

Alex Kidd never looked as good as he did on the Master System. Shame SEGA will never re-release Shinobi World for new audiences.

I like this option. Will encourage girls to play a good game and go searching for other cool old games rather than some horrible modern abomination.

When you get powerups (in the stage before), you realize some weapons fire faster than others. I think the kunais fire much faster than everything else.
If you die though, then you're pretty much fucked.

It was good back in the day but it's been surprassed, especially the level design - most of it is just big straight lines.

aren't there SMS games that actually read the extra button on the Genesis controller to do something?
I know it's possible to do, but I can't remember if anyone actually did it.

So, I played an hour of Psycho Fox today and I can't say it's a game I would recommend to someone who doesn't have any affection for it. I rented this game many times in my childhood and this is the reason why I'm gonna go until the end because I didn't get to beat it. Like I said before, last time I played it was about 3 years ago and my nostalgia goggles were utterly destroyed. I can't say that my hype-o-meter raised any single bit after playing it today but listening to the main theme again is nostalgic as fuck.

Cool things I didn't remember: you can glide over water when you're running very fast and if you run all the way to the end of a ledge and hold the opposite direction, psycho fox will go into a startled animation and run in the air all the way back to the platform, similar to old cartoons. Pretty neat stuff that I don't remember seeing in any other game.

So far, the main thing I dislike in the game is the level design. They have a lot verticality, which is usually an welcome addition, but you don't get to see what's below and often times there's nothing in the right side either. In some games, when you hold down, not only the character will crouch but the camera moves further below allowing you to see if there's a safe place to land. In Psycho Fox this doesn't happen so end up making lots of leaps of faith since stage 1 that'll often times lead you to death either by a bottomless pit or by falling straight before an enemy, although getting killed by running into enemies was my fault since the invincibility power-up isn't rare to find, I was just lazy to get into the menu and activate it. This disencouraged me to explore and I ended going through the lowest route possible after losing some lives. Another annoying thing is that for a momentum based platformer you get a shit ton of stair-like platforms. The game gets better in worlds 4 and 5 though.

I played mostly as the monkey. It has the highest jump and doesn't run very fast. The tiger is the fastest character but everytime I got too fast I died, obviously. Might be fun playing as him if you get to know the game better and memorize the levels. The hippo is almost useless his only purpose is to break rocks.

Continues are infinite and take you right back at the stage you died.
