Which is more fun? Which do you prefer? Which one is the better game?

Wolfenstein 3D (including SoD) vs DOOM (just the internal WADs, no Brutal). Which is it?

Doom all the way. Wolfenstein may have been an impressive step forward in 1992, but Doom blows it out of the water in every aspect.

Wolfenstein's combat feels more intense (and the pistol is way more satisfying than Doom's), but Doom improved on Wolfenstein in a ton of ways, especially in terms of map design. I love both, but I'd have to say that I like Doom better.

Doom does almost everything better than Wolf 3. I say almost everything, because Wolf 3D does have a primitive stealth play mechanic that lets you sneak up on enemy soldiers and shank them. Doom has no stealth like feature, as all monsters know where you are. But sometimes the monster in-fighting with Doom can be fun.

Wolf3D has its charm. It's satisfying to get a free life from collecting treasure. The levels with red brick walls give me a headache every time but that's part of the fun.

A map feature would have really added a lot with how easy it is to get lost. I think ECWolf might have one, but I never tried it.

Wolfenstein was nothing more than a proof of concept engine demo compared to Doom. And people knew this; that's why Doom was bought in stores for money while Wolfenstein was shareware copied on floppies.

This is simply false. While vanilla Doom doesn't offer the relatively complex guard walking/patrol system (they added a way to do it in ZDoom levels though) you can still walk into a room full of demons with their backs turned to you and get a free shot. The only thing is that they react to your gunshots and wake up from it. I don't remember anymore if the fist is silent in vanilla but I know in at least Strife you could silently kill guards with the knife and nobody would hear.

Doom wasn't sold in stores until it was The Ultimate Doom and that was after Doom 2 was out. The original game was distributed as shareware too. Nobody passed around the full version of Wolfenstein unless they were a pirate who passed around all kinds of shit. I actually have a later era boxed copy of Wolfenstein that I did buy in a store, and it came with a dope manual written by Tom Hall and John Romero detailing all kinds of level design stuff and had all kinds of insight about why they did certain things, plus stuff like Adrian's design sketch for Hans Grosse. I wish I could find it again as I'm sure it'd be amazing to read now.
