Maybe I am just not understanding the differences in how data is load on a CD-ROM vs a on a RAM cart, but doesn't this seem like a colossal fuck up?

The OP is that dumb/underage, isn't he?

So I'll break it down for you. A disc-based console like a PS1 has a fixed amount of RAM (1MB in the PS1's case) that game data is loaded into and so it has to frequently stop and load things off the disc. A cartridge console just maps the ROM into the CPU's address space with some RAM for game variables.

Does that clear enough up, Anon-kun?

It allowed people in the west to play FFV for the first time, which was a big deal. While Chrono Trigger is well known and popular today, it wasn't nearly as popular in the west during its initial release on SNES. With Chrono Cross being a big success, it garnered a heavy interest in Chrono Trigger by people who hadn't played it before and allowed them to access to it. So that was the importance of FF Chronicles.

With widespread emulation and re-relases on other consoles, the anthology and chronicles are not worth playing because of the load times.

Old console loads up the entire game at once. New console can only load 1mb at a time. Got it! Thanks for the explanation.

The entirety of FFVI is about 3MB. Couldn't they have done something cool like split the game in three, and then load it entirely in one go?

Dude, why are you like this? Talking down to others achieves nothing. He was merely confused with why something that was clearly less than 5MBs in size had load times, it's an oxymoron and you're treating him like the slow kid in class. Christ, I bet you have no friends.

Yes, they could have done something of that nature.

Maybe today... but then not so much.

It was just good to get the collection. That's what it felt like, just a collection - not a "last gen" port or anything where an upgrade would feel expected. Load times were not even a talking point, people just thought... ofc it will have cd load times... it's on cd.

Then again, I didn't know anyone that was still hung up on Nintendo when this come out. I'm sure there were places where people spent all day jerking off over the idea of other people having to wait a couple of seconds to open a menu, but it wasn't that widespread.

NES games usually don't since the cartridge ROM is bank switched on most stuff made after 1985. SNES/Genesis games can handle up to 4MB of ROM so most of their games don't bank switch.

Here we go with this ridiculous load times bullshit. Here is a list of all FF games with load times significantly greater than on original hardware if played on a ps2/3/4/p/v:
FF6
End of list.

There's a couple 6MB ones; I think Chrono Trigger was one, but in general it was rare for SNES/Genesis games to be big enough to require bank switching.

I don't know if the same is true for 2, but in the first FF on the NES half the statuses were broken, some stuff just didn't work at all and the game was a buggy piece of shit.

A major part of FF2 is getting the Ultima spell, which is bugged and worse than pretty much every other spell
You can also instakill the final boss with the toad spell with a neat glitch
