We have many projects going, and if you want to share your maps or join in whatever thing you may want feel free to do it.

Remember, to join the /vr/ servers, you should get Zandronum
Standard passwords for /vr/ servers: vidya, vidyagaems, videojuegos
If these do not work, ctrl+f the server name.

For singleplayer, use GZDoom SVN builds. vid_renderer can switch between software and OpenGL so you don't have to install zdoom as well.

I make a map in doom builder 2 (that uses 1 custom enemy) and I can playtest it just fine, though when I save the wad and try to load it outside doom builder 2, I get the "!" icon.
How can I fix this so it saves with added resources?

I've tried dropping the wad file in via slade and that does not seem to fix it. Where have I goofed?

Posted late in the last thread so only got one reply. One guy said it's fine so long as it's not a total labyrinth but... That's kinda what I was planning.

Here's THE TWEEST though- You start off on a high up vantage point, so that you can kinda see the layout of the place before you jump on the lift and head down into the darkness and demon growls.... Far off at the other side of the room, you can see your goal, the yellow key.

Would that be good? Kinda thinking like that second hub of Quake 2. You know the part I mean.

Makan levels is fun.

I don't know why but there's something about the limitations you have with the doom engine that makes designing levels a more satisfying experience. It's more about making something that flows well and has decent aesthetics, without all the superfluous realism of modern games.

I guess it's kinda like the satisfaction of making a decent four track recording on tape, instead of using Pro Tools and layering 64 tracks through a ton of fancy plugins. Simple but has it's own appeal.

Chaingunners were already a pain in the ass. If there's 10 of us playing, it'd be fun. Otherwise, with 3-7 people, it'll get boring real quick. However... if someone was willing to, say, use Ultimate DOOM and replace the monsters with chaingunners, and give a 50% chance of shotgun spawns being either a shotgun, or a super shotgun, then yes. Really I just think of all the fights that were fun in the various Doom games, and remix them a bit.

I find what really helps it to try think of a storyline in your head for the map as you're designing it. This will only come across very subtly to the player, due to the abstract nature of such low-fidelity graphics, but it definitely keeps you going and helps with the flow.

So for example you throw down a couple of rooms, you get stuck- You need to think what those rooms are, why they exist. Was this a techbase? So what were those rooms? What was happening there before demons showed up? So from there you can fill in the details, little bits of scenery, and it'll give you new ideas for the architecture of the area, and a logical progression on what you want the player to do next.

Like I said this is for your benefit making the map, don't worry about if it will affect the player- They only need to know kill demons, find keys, get to exit (unless you are doing some crazy Zdoom scripted stuff I guess). But it keeps you inspired long enough to at least get the basics of your map drafted out and helps you fill out the details of the aesthetics.

Sadly, most mods involve small corridors, which easily become stupidly unplayable when with other players. With friendly fire is off, you still can't see what's up ahead, and there's two issues for balance--either one player gets first dibs on items and weapons, or items are left to respawn. There's never the "one item for each player" flag on.

Bait, I know, but: It's fun to reminisce on what a different world it was back then. I'm glad to have been around long enough that gaming still held some surprises and to see a time where everything wasn't dissected online before things even got to retail.

For straferunning to really be 'discovered' needed someone to be playing with using a mouse, know it's possible to jack up the sensitivity beyond the menu bar in the config file, notice the effect, realize its worth and how to implement it properly in combat, have access to the greater Doom 'community' and be willing to share their secret... Etc. A lot of stuff had to fall in to place in a largely offline world.

It always blows my mind when the id guys talk about not anticipating rocket jumping in Quake and being amazed when they saw people doing it online, especially given Doom has a couple of secrets that involved rocketing yourself off walls.
