Mine is an overpriced meme shop full of douchebags that don't know very much about video games.

>> No.4840316

Mine is in a big open space with huge wire racks lining the walls.
All the gems are held behind a glass display counter. Although they have a decent stock of vidya, most of the space in the store is taken up by giant tables where kids play yugioh (i think the place is an official yugioh league host or something like that)
I visit every other month or so, the owner is cool, but the stock sucks since you have to constantly monitor their Facebook page to see when the good stuff comes in and try and beat other nerds to it, otherwise you'll find nothing but old sports games and jeopardy on ps1

One in Shoreline Washington I go to is pretty good. Whenever there's new games coming out I like to preorder there to support them. I make a walk there every time listening to some IDM music then excitedly walk home, I got Yakuza 6 there recently.

Two guys I went to middle school and high school work in mine so I refuse to go in there. It's only about 5 min from my house but I refuse to shop there since I never want to see them again and the few times I've been there the service and selection was terrible.

I drive out to the city instead. I live in Chicago so I have to deal with some higher prices on occasion but typically stores in the city will have pretty good stock actually and the people inside will be cool so I'm fine paying $5-10 more, though I don't go over that.

All but one store in my area are either:

>owned by an enthusiast who basically uses the store as a museum for their personal collection and won't take less than what they see people asking on shitbay

>owned by a scalper/hoarder who has 2,000 copies of every N64 sports game and tries to sell you dirty, malfunctioning hardware

The one good store has a tight, catered selection and has a nice arcade in the back. Been to a few TTT2 and T7 tournaments there. It's called the Gaming Zone in Tempe, AZ.

I was actually going to type out the story surrounding my store, but it's too fuckin' long. Basically, a douchebag used to own it a long time ago, then he sold it to this young black dude. The new guy did a really good job of maintaining it and had good business practices, and made it a genuinely fun place to hang out. (While he owned it, there was always at least one person hanging out in the store, playing vidja or at least a round of MtG. He also had at least SOMETHING going on each weekend. Obscure fighting game tournaments, smash Bros, Pokemon TCG... Something!)

After owning that place for like ten years he actually got a job offer at some game store in Japan. He said that he couldn't pass that up, so now he lives over there, and he sold the business to a new dude.

The new guy was just fucking awful, but he eventually got arrested for unlawful interactions with minors in his store, and then he ended up selling it to someone else, who's basically made it into a "Bazinga!"-tier capeshit and trendy "geek" crap store. From what I've heard, he babysits his wife there by giving her a "job", and she's a real cunt.

Anyway, I used to go to the Swap Meet all the time, but they're a bit too scummy for my standards. It's too bad Game Hits closed down. I had been shopping their for as long as I can remember. Disc Traders shoved them right out. Have you tried Replay Exchange in Old Town?

Pretty nice store, I like fallout games, even though I haven’t been there in a while. The have three locations I think. Bookmans is usually too expensive and has the sports game problem. There’s also The Game Zone in Gilbert which usually has a small selection but I’ve found some gems there, it’s generally the most expensive shop but part of me just likes that it’s ran by some old lady. I don’t stop in much at all but when I did I always bought something.

Douchey owner who is into anthropomorphic human dragon hybrid art, aka furry with scales and not fur. I'm not joking about this. He and his wife (or girlfriend) have drawings of them as dragon-people.

Tons of sports games or shit tier games with no brains on how to clear them out. Put those fuckers on sale or throw in one with another purchase, like a buy one get one (must be sports or a certain section) free.

They have slightly improved in that most commons are now labeled with prices (it took them two years to get to this point). The most annoying thing is anything over about $10 isn't labeled and they literally look it up on pricecharting.com in front of you. They say they price it slightly below ebay, yet somehow their torn and stained label games are always at least $2-4 over ebay value.

They basically give you 10% of the value of your games/systems if you trade in and that's only for decent games. Have a copy of Earthbound and a SNES setup with all cords and 2 controllers? I can do $45, but that's only because SNES is popular and sells fast and the one you're selling is pristine with no yellowing.

There is also a dude working there that looks like he's about 23-25 who looks either stoned or inbred to stupidity, yet I think he's 100% sober. When you buy something he can't count change and afterwards he says in the most socially awkward monotone way "Thank you Thssuuurr." I'm not a dick to anyone and treat him nicely but that "Thank you Thssuuuurr" almost drives me insane.

Judge for yourself, my local retro game store allows a google maps online tour:

https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x487a717a31a9045d:0x361341e297e927a9!2m22!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m16!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!2m2!1m1!1e6!3m1!7e115!4shttps://lh5.googleusercontent.com/p/AF1QipMB1wE6TXVVbHFxV84Z9IgXVz8wc_GpVghP1HF0=w284-h160-k-no!5sshogun%20games%20stafford%20-%20Google%20Search&imagekey=!1e10!2sAF1QipOLzp-t9NAglnFQAgw5NhuuJQiBKg9xmjd04Doe&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjBrZbij9jbAhUHQMAKHWlLAcwQoioIiwEwCg

Sadly it's mostly gen6+ and the stock doesn't update as often as I'd like, but I try my best to support them because I fear its days may be numbered. It actually got popular enough to upgrade to a larger store, but every time I go now it's just me or 1 other person.

It's also the only independent gaming store left, and only 1 of 3 gaming stores which stocks any retro games at all (and 1 of the stores is rarely open).

Not too bad a selection of games, but their retro stuff is a bit pricey, so usually I go there for newer, used games. (Whitewater is nothing but a glorified college town) Only place I ever saw SSB4 for less than $40.
Other than that, Mega Media Xchange is the best bet. That's a smallish (4-5 stores) chain that sells DVD's, to laptops, to TV's to videogames. If you want some retro vidya, it's not terrible, and in fact pretty fair (I saw them selling a CIB Mario 3 for $30 once) but those stores are far away.

I called my local gaming store, "Mike's" because of it's owner. He does sell cards, pricey dicey, mangas, /toy/ shit, board games, and even video games. I'm also one of the seven owners in my country to have possession of an elusive GB game which makes a full copy of Shantae seemed plentiful.

I know your pain, anon.

Used to have one a 10 minute walk away, and got some decent games like Shadow Dancer for £3 and Final Fantasy 7 CIB for 30p but it closed down back in 2014, and whenever I check their stock online it's usually awful or overpriced. I mean they sell controller for fucking £10 and usually mislabel them.

The last thing I did buy was Power Stone 2 CIB for £30, not a great deal but it's slightly lower than it would've been in Cex, and I could see the box I was buying. I also got Rocket Knight Adventures for £18 CIB back in September which I was quite happy with since I had just finished it a few days prior.

I'm still pissed that Cex and Gamestation (RIP) no longer have 6th gen games at a decent price now that I have income. Back in 2012, I found SoA:L for £22 now it goes for £70+ on Cex, bought Twin Snakes in 2013 for £32, and it's now £60+. Wish I bought more GC games.

Mine is a store that sells more game related shit like mugs and pillows than actual games.
On the upside, the retro shit they do have is moderately well priced, with a few daft exceptions. They'll sell Super Mario 3 for $8 but want $160 for FF12:ZA, FF7 for $20 but Zelda 3 for $60. Nonsense.

it's called "the exchange" and is part of a chain. They also do music and movies. I go in there more to browse anymore since their prices are often way too high, especially on game consoles. I usually go there only if there's a specific game I'm looking for, and that's only to see if it's cheaper than getting it online. It becomes too congested in there as soon as another customer walks in so you cant really window shop. Even though there's a lot of reproduction stuff, he has pretty much every console and a good amount of rare games.

I guess there's a huge market for reproduction carts since scalpers are resorting to compulsive hoarding as legitimate cartridges get older/more scarce. I went on eBay to look for an authentic Pokemon Emerald and I'm greeted with this shit. So before I pay for a beat-up cartridge sight unseen, I'm going to at least check to see if this store has it. I doubt he has any legitimate copies, but I'll check this weekend even though they are resold almost immediately after trade-in.

They actually opened up a second location that was only a three minute drive from their first. Not sure why they thought they could sustain the business when 99% of their inventory never seems to change because it's overpriced shovelware shit. Sometimes I would visit the two locations in the same day and the same games would have different prices. The second store closed down after a few years. They're just not priced to sell. The only guy I buy games from anymore is a dude at the flea market who collects games on the side, so it's not his only source of income, so he isn't such a jew when he prices his stuff. Every week at least 50% of his inventory gets moved while some dick in another stall is trying to get $90 for Super Metroid.

Get Your Game On in Ann Arbor.

They’re okay, nothing rare there, just they typical games you’d expect for the respective consoles. The prices are the same as eBay. They have a decent enough SNES and Genesis selection. They do hardware repairs too and do a good job at that. My most recent buy from them was PS2 component cables.
