Remove the game and make Unreal 2 in its place.

Basically everything in this game sucked except the fact it was very pretty for its time. Combat sucked, weapons were creative but ended underpowered and had pew-pew noises, levels were linear and boring, the plot was a disaster, the characters were undeveloped and barebone... There were many good ideas and not one was successfully implemented. I'm still sad about it even today.

Have it take place after Operation Na Pali, where you take the role of Prisoner 849. Add weapon upgrades that would hint on their future designs to UT99. Have several references to the consented murder law which play into the rise of the Tournament. Add better modding support, like HL level of modding. I think that's why Unreal doesn't get enough, it just needs more modding support.

UT99 feels like the right combination of passion and experience. You can tell the Unreal 1 team was eager to expand and experiment more with different styles after Unreal 1's long development time. The wide variety of map locations, more flexible GUI that expands modding access, and free bonus packs after release shows a genuine passion for the game you don't really see anymore.

Just looking at the maps, you can tell they had lots of fun fiddling with the engine for new ideas, such as with AS-HiSpeed, DM-Barricade, AS-Overlord, CTF-EternalCaves,and DOM-Condemned. The maps give off a feeling of true love and excitement for making UT99.

I think it helped that the same guys that did the art and level design for Unreal 1 also reprised their for UT99 very soon after U1 was released. It adds a consistency that makes the transition from completely different areas much easier when they're governed by the same philosophy in terms of art.

U1 also has that consistency between art and style, which makes things like transitioning from a Nali village to a giant spaceship parked nearby much easier to swallow as well.

The thing with UT99 is by default it moved at a slower pace than Quake did, which gave you time to admire the level between firefights. with later UT games the game got sped up and spread out. You didn't have time to admire the architecture in 2003-4 or UT3. guys, I'm an old ut2004 mapper (not a professional one), as Epic will not do anything about the ut2004 20th anniversary, I'd like to make an sp campaign for it, what do you think?

(of course I have nothing, not even a plot, I'm just thinking in reusing a lot of assets from several maps, mods and code from other unreal engine 1-2 games with included editors)

I think just using old skool monsta toolz and ultimate mapping tools one can do something pleasing

You'll also want all that's in the Editor's Choice Edition in general, but the most important parts of this are Jailbreak and ChaosUT 2 (set the latter up as a mutator, instructions are in it's readme).

The intention is that the team has to protect you as you head to the enemy goal, but the AI isn't smart or coordinated enough to pull it off. It turns into you running for dear life as the enemy team instantly homes in on you while your teammates stare at walls.

To be fair, "the enemy team tries to gangrape you the moment you get to an objective while your teammates do nothing" describes the AI in every team game mode in UT2k4.

One strategy I did was when I see enemy bots coming towards me, I shoot in an arc angle so the ball passes above them.
Since that keeps them busy trying to get the ball, I just whip out either shock or lighting gun and kill them one by one.
It doesn't work quite well in enclosed areas obviously, or more tight ones (Twin Tombs comes to mind), but most maps in BR are pretty much composed of open areas, so the strategy is guaranteed to work most of the time.

That could be done without much hassle. You just change around the offsets or the drawscale for playerview. A mutator to replace all guns with versions that show up smaller or at a different position in the viewport would be my guess. Something like that really doesn't exists?

Anyway example console commands in game to check out the right placement would be
set 'weaponname' PlayerViewOffset=(X=4.800000,Y=-1.700000,Z=-2.700000)
or
set 'weaponname' PlayerViewScale=0.8 [this may not be defined, so it won't do anything, use DrawScale=0.8 instead, although that also changes the size of its pickup and 3rdperson model]

not retro but what's the best renderer to use for ut2004? I've read that d3d8 and below runs emulated on windows 10 in windowed mode only and noticed graphical errors like the water. I've tried Opengl which fixes the errors but it also seems to run only in a window for some reason because capture software like obs won't see it. Then there is the d3d8to9 wrapper https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases which I used which does actually seem to run in fullscreen. I think dgvoodoo can also do d3d8 but I haven't tried it.

well they also suggest opengl which is implied to be worse somehow although I haven't noticed any differences in rendering.

Something strange is that when using the opengl renderer, "stat fps" will show that the game is running in excess of 500 fps. This would imply there is no vsync enabled but I get no screen tearing. Is the driver using some sort of fast sync automatically? I have never seen that before.

I can get the same behavior if I use fast sync with d3d8to9.

A remake of the old game should not be "let's just put shiny shaders everywhere".

>>4838186

Unreal is a slow-paced adventure into a beautifuly designed alien world, at least the first 2/3 of it. By the last third mappers lost their steam and it began getting stale. The action is slower and more methodical, not as heartpumping and exciting as one of Quake and Doom. In the end, Unreal is appealing to a much narrower audience that Quake and Doom do.

>> No.5043323

>>5042951
>The action is slower and more methodical
Combat in Unreal can be quite frantic though, it's just that the TTK is relatively high so it lasts for a while. What is noticeably slower is traveling from place to place since you can't bunny hop for speed like in Quake or move faster than a horse like in Doom.
