Some people really want /vr/ to not be part of 4chan. Even though they could go to another retro board that actually isn't 4chan, they still insist on coming here and then whining like babies that it's not what they want. Pretty funny if you ask me.

>> No.4836676 [DELETED]

>>4836651
>>4836658
Consolewar faggotry on /vr/ is fueled by the need of many people to defend their own childhoods on one hand, and on the other hand younger impressionable people get into it due to books with very doubtful sources, like that one Console War book by Steven L. Kent. Not saying young people read books, but they watch youtubers who parrot memes from that book a lot. Also dedicated younger console warriors from /v/ might get into retro console wars just for the heck of it.
But yeah, it's not comparable to actual modern console wars on /v/ where people actually battle it out as if they were employees of the companies they are defending.
On /vr/ is mostly just defending the childhood, on /v/ it's a war on a daily basis, and everyday they have something new to use as ammo.

>> No.4836689 [DELETED]

>>4836676
Pretty much this, the Console war shit that happens here feels more like kids on the playground or in the cafeteria arguing about Blast Processing or Mode 7, the shit you see on /v/ feels like shills/hardcore fanboys screeching at each other.

>> No.4836701 [DELETED]

>>4836671
Not sure what you're implying, /vr/ is pretty typical for a 4chan board. I think you must be pretty narrow in your board browsing habits to think that boards are supposed to be more like /v/ than they are /vr/. The super-duper shitpost boards, despite being the majority of posts due to their popularity, are actually in the minority overall. Those mega-popular boards collect most of the riff-raff in one place and the other boards are much less affected. If anything, the only problem with /vr/ is that it's one letter away from /v/, meaning it's an easy second jumping point for shitposters on their daily log.

>> No.4836712 [DELETED]

>>4836689
Ok, I haven't been on /v/ since /vr/ came around so I'll take your word for it.
It's just that the console war shitflinging here wasn't always this bad and really does resemble the same sort of shitflinging /v/ had back when /vr/ was new.

isn't left the intended look for the game, difficulty seeing the bottom and all?

what's software refering to?

>> No.4837275

>>4837221
Software rendering uses CPU and its the most accurate and literally what the developers intended.

Hardware acceleration like Direct3D and OpenGL modes are just effects thrown in for the sake of demoing tech at the time and looks crappy. The software water refraction looks 1000x more realistic and appealing than the slimy goopy shader they put in. Hardware rendering also created some unintended rendering bugs.

>> No.4837289

>>4837275
It's not "demoing tech", it's taking shortcuts so it could be rendered using the simplistic GPUs that were available at the time. Programmable shaders weren't even a thing on consumer graphics cards yet.

>and literally what the developers intended.

then why does it work with those modes by default

>> No.4837313

>>4837301
Because software rendering is slooooowww. In the days before shaders, a lot of effects could only be rendered using software, but you'd be stuck with very low resolutions and frame rates; not a great experience unless you had no other choice. Of course, it doesn't matter now because CPUs are so monstrously overpowered compared to what was available back then.

>> No.4837315

>>4837313
yeah but i mean, if that's what happened, why do you assume the devs intended for software rendering and didn't build the game around it looking good on hardware?

>> No.4837327

>>4837315
I'm not the guy you were replying to before, but I'd say they intended you to use whatever was available to you. They obviously expected anyone with the option to use hardware rendering, because it was a much better experience at the time. But they had more freedom to implement various effects in software, so it could be argued that software version is closer to their vision of how they wanted the game to look, even if it couldn't be done on the 3D accelerators of the day.

>> No.4837329

>>4837327
How they wanted it to look is a contentious point.. Gaben in fact has gone on record that lots of compromises are made when designing games and that includes choosing the best possible graphics without exceeding budget or pc capabilities.

I think they decided the murky graphics were the best path and build the game around making the best out of their use. Not even saying software rendering doesn't look better, but claiming that it was the intended way it was meant to be played is just pretentious.

The one on the right doesn't have refraction, it's just an animated texture on top of the water plane, just like the one on the left.

Look at the ground beneath the water: it isn't being distorted.

To create this effect they probably just got some footage of a rippling water surface, lowered the resolution, reduced the colours then looped it and added it as a tiled animation with 95% transparency to the water plane.
