I never owned a Sega CD and never thought to look at youtube videos of Sonic CD until now, and as someone who grew up playing the regular Sonic Genesis games (original, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Spinball, and also Chaotix if you count that as Sonic / Genesis despite being Knuckles / 32X) this is the weirdest looking and sounding Sonic game I'm aware of.

This riff right here, what the fuck:

Also the loading music (which I think is for the Sega CD system and not specific to this game) and a lot of the sounds in general sound extremely dated in a good way. It's kind of creepy listening to it since it's both very familiar and also completely alien because I never had this video game system and probably have never heard these songs and most of these sound effects until now.

No, that isn't an accurate comparison. The SNES had neither the storage nor the power to display large pre-rendered images like FF7. The backgrounds were painstakingly designed in order to fit the seamless 3D CG look but still use traditional tile-based images. Trying to make tiny tiles that all fit together in various ways to create multiple seamless images is far more impressive than just slapping a single full image onto the screen.

>> No.4831275

I've never read specifics, but they supposedly came up with a new compression tech for DKC that allowed them to pack many more assets than usual, though it's still impressive they managed to have as many enemies, animations and level flavas as they had.

They still put a lot of work into touching up the 2D sprites to make them look as good as possible with the limited number of available colors. And that's just for the character sprites, the backgrounds are even more impressive than you're giving credit for (see

I agree, the skill and ingenuity involved is usually taken for granted. Though I see how people may find what he >>4831289 calls "pixel art" the superior (or at least more fashionable to praise) discipline for creating low resolution visuals, since it was tailor-made for those conditions and eventually developed its own visual language, almost as an actual art medium

Prerendered visuals as a technique was more about the optimization for extremely constricted output resolution of graphics created for potentially ANY resolution. Since these consoles worked with 1-bit transparency assets (each pixel is either transparent or not), converting the anti-aliased contours into usable sprites must have been fucking hell, and even then it still doesn't look perfect -like with those grey pixels around Diddy-

Sonic CD is the only classic Sonic game I consistently come back to a play all the way through. Sometimes I just blast through it, other times I try to get all the good futures, and if I'm feeling extra plucky I'll go for all the time time stones too.

I know that the SoTN is technically superior and all but i kinda like the look of Dracula X more. I think the environments have more variety and allows the game to be visually interesting where as SoTN was inside the Castlevania and had less environmental variety to work with. Plus SoTN recycles some sprites which isn't that big a deal since the sprites were good to begin with so i feel like it loses some points on that too.
