my favorite is X, longer than 1, but shorter than 3. mission 5 of 3 is great, but a fuckin pain for 1cc. never really played anything past the pre-bankruptcy games, other than XX, though, even though i own MS Anthology on Wii

Metal slug 1 > 2/X > 3 is the classic trilogy
Metal Slug 4 had some issues (like the boat level) but overall it was not as bad as people say.
Metal Slug 5 is good, just not as good as the first 3

If you mind 240p output on crt then Metal Slug Anthology for ps2 with the 240p hex edit is a valid option. Might be placebo effect but the edited versione seems somewhat less laggy.

Metal Slug 3 last I burned myself out with trying to beat the last mission in one continue I guess. Also the the 4th missions boss is BS.

You can overclock them on MAME by activating cheats. The originals have slowdown, though.
