Mein Freunds, have you any recommendations for PC arcade sticks? I want a balance between quality and price (at or under $60, ideally). So far, this Mayfield here seems to be the best bet, though some of the harsher reviews are making me reticent. I'll mainly be using it for shmups so I don't need fighter-level accuracy, but I don't want a rickety piece of trash either. Experiences with this particular piece of hardware, and any others, are welcome.

WWE Brawlstick. Upgrade whatever components you want if and when. They used to be like $30 not that long ago and now they're double that though.

I'd rather pay more for quality out of the box rather than mod, unless you can achieve the same result for cheaper. (Also have never modded a stick, is it complicated?)

The brawlstick will be as good or better than that mayflash one right out of the box and although I assume the mayflash also takes standard parts and connections I know for a fact that the brawlstick is sturdy. Replacing parts in arcade sticks is really easy as long as you get one to begin with that accepts standard ones.

This is what I was going to say too. I have a pair I modded with genuine Sanwa sticks and buttons. One is black and yellow like a Namco, one is white and green like a Dreamcast. It's easy as. Pic related.

You can spend 10x that amount on an "arcade quality" pre-made stick if you want to. There will be no difference in feel or performance.

get a used ps360 gen stick from madcatz or hori with sanwa or seimitsu parts. With a bit of luck you can get one for 50-70 bucks.

Then if you need current gen compat get a brook PCB.

brawlstick recommendation was valid years ago but now just get a used stick.

Some old school OG correct me if I'm wrong here:

Happ sticks are what were used in America for fighting games. They require more "force" to use than sanwa as I recall. These days they are an acquired taste mostly for people who rocked on Marvel 2 cabinets for a long ass time.

Interesting, I actually was looking for sticks like those found in old-school arcades but didn't realize they're so stiff outside of a cabinet. (OP here), ugh this is still tough. I don't know how "decent" decent is when it comes to sticks, or even buttons for that matter. The B-tier sticks here for example >>4828323 have "generic parts" listed as a pro, but I assume that's only because they can be swapped out. Basically, am I wasting my money on anything but Sanwa? Is Sanwa above and beyond what's needed, or is everything else just not really up to snuff?

>> No.4828451

generic parts are "-" (minus) or neutral at best.
The go-to parts are either Sanwa or Seimitsu.
The good thing is that you can swap sticks and buttons decently easily if you find one quits you better than the other.

There's lots of customization options as well if you look into different springs for joysticks, or gaskets for Korean levers. There's mechanical switch replacements for buttons as well, gamerfinger I think was the first for that, but, I think paradise arcade offers cherry switches replacements now.

If you go to arcade shock, paradise arcade or focus attack you'll find all the parts you're looking for if you are in the market to do some easy modifcations to whatever stick you choose.

Anything based on the Mayflash V2. There's a bunch but it's all the same except for the consoles they support. I have the Venom Arcade for example. I believe Mayflash also rereleased it as the F400 for newer consoles. If you're only interested in PC just find the cheapest one.
Good case, easy to replace art if you're into that (glass is held on by magnets instead of screws). Adequate stock parts and piss easy to replace with better parts.

Depends on the parts. I could not tell any difference between Sanwa JLF and MadCatz joystick, but the Sanwa buttons are noticeably better than MadCatz. I also have a cheap old Hori PS2 stick and the joystick on that is crap.

I picked up the PS3 version of the Qanba Q1 a few years ago for about $50. Spent another $20 buying a Sanwa stick and matching buttons. It's been a super solid stick, haven't had a single problem with it in the 4 years I've had it. Excellent for PC fighting games and arcade emulation.

There are a handful of decent sticks for classic consoles--Mega Drive 6 button JP stick, Namco stick and old Hori RAPs for PlayStation, Green Goblin for Dreamcast, and certain Virtua sticks for the Saturn. Most of the others are not very good though.

If you can find a comfortable arcade stick for cheap and stick a Cthulhu in it, you can use it for almost every classic system and PC as long as you are willing to make the cables. You do have to use an adapter with it to work with Genga Drive though. Another option is Brooks converters with a newer stick, although they only have them for DC and PS1/2 at the moment.

there are youtube videos and tutorials dating back to 09 on how to mod this thing. Mods for Street Fighter IV SE stick apply as well as they are the same thing.

Everyone is going to say sanwa parts, but their buttons are too sensitive (you cant rest your fingers atop them at all) and they dont make a satisfying clack sound. the seimitsu buttons are just as responsive and durable, but take just enough more pressure that you can put your fingers on them without registering a press.

and I prefer the seimitsu ls-32-01 to the sanwa JLF (especially with a battop), but there is an extra step to adding one to a brawl stick. you got to unscrew the base, rotate the pcb, and plug the power plug in upside down.

Picked this up new for about 30 bucks. Stock parts were awful and died within 12-24 hours of total usage. Swapped it all out including the controller board and have been nothing but happy since.

I also just printed out the parts to make a small second controller and bought one of those 15 dollar sets of stick/buttons/controller from Dealextreme to see how they hold up; you get what you pay for. The controller board is identical to the one in the TvC stick but the buttons were garbage OOB; had to lube them to keep them from sticking constantly. The stick is okay but the balltop needs some loctite because it keeps unscrewing in my hands. Honestly the case itself has been trouble free, if small.

i peeled away the wrestling mans to discover 4 completely pointless holes in the faceplate surrounding the joystick hole. fuck i cant paint over that. but then i remembered something i learned one day going too deep on youtube. no fucking idea how i ended up on a video about repairing chips in carbon fiber air plane propellers, but the tip came in handy. aparently if you throw baking soda on crazy glue it drys instantly and harder than it would otherwise. shit worked. plugged up those holes, sanded them down and im off to paint

>>4849881
Those holes look like ones for mounting the joystick. Probably they cut the plates for several models, then slap a sticker on to cover whatever they don't use.

For some reason I just figured the pad would work like a macro pad. I did not even think that I would have to remap it to keyboard commands. When I tried it on my mac earlier the program automatically discovered it and treated it like a macro pad.

Used the info from this thread and have a F300 on the way to mod. Being in Australia I'm having a hard time finding websites to order parts from. Most stores in Australia seem to have unbranded stock parts for sale so I may have to get things shipped internationally.

How good is Focus Attack? Are they recommended?

Otherwise if you know where I can buy a Seimitsu LS-56 with an octagon gate and Sanwa buttons in Australia, that will be a significant help.

Focus Attack is pretty much the best all-around store in the States. If they ship internationally I would highly recommend using them. However, as others have pointed out, if you can wait until Evo there will likely be some decent discounts run by all parts stores.

Also, for those who might be interested, levered Cherry switches are available at arcadeworlduk and they do ship internationally.

Omron is a good switch maker and has widespread popularity for their switches which are used in Sanwa sticks as well as some Seimitsu now that Panasonic stopped making certain switches. Cherry is also a good switch maker and is popular because their switches were used in almost all old Western buttons as well as some old Western sticks. Both makers are very good and which one you should use comes down to preference. However, levered Cherry switches were almost impossible to find for some time and finding a seller is very exciting. I just threw some in my Infiltration meme lever and I'm really impressed so far.

their last ones were fucking overpriced just because LOLPS4.
Also, the fightpad pro was super shitty, despite being touted as a saturn pad equivalent. They were so insecure about it that they didn't sent review samples, except to lowtiergod (lol) who got roasted for not pointing obvious flaws.
