Being honest, even if this is obviously bait, this game is a better candidate than what' usually suggested as the peak for games (cinematic garbage), so that's something.

The other day, I found the JP MegaDrive version at the game store so I picked it up as a novelty. I played it as a kid but felt like it didn't hold up these days. I was showing it to my wife and she had never heard of it, so I booted up the arcade version in MAME to just show her for a sec and I actually started having tons of fun and beat the whole game. Honestly didn't expect to have as much fun with it as I did.

pic related, mfw I beat the game

Indeed, people need to stop playing inferior ports when arcades are so easily accessible.
We had a shitstorm a few weeks ago when in a shmup thread someone posted Raiden TRAD (not the original arcade) as one of his favorite games.

More like busybodies need to quit sperging out over what releases of games people like. If it's not available on 8- or 16-bit home hardware, I don't care about muh superior original arcade experience. The Raiden Trad ports have their flaws (especially the SNES version), but I'm not going apologize for liking them.

>If it's not available on 8- or 16-bit home hardware, I don't care about muh superior original arcade experience.
The issue is that this is not a slightly superior version we're talking about, it's substantially better, and not hard to access at all. You're straight up limiting yourself for no reason other than just only wanting to play on older consoles.

>> No.4832284

@4831697

I remember playing this game in an arcade back in the mid-90s or so and being so hyped about it. Didn't have a Genesis as a kid, so I was never exposed to it until the arcade version. Sure, the style is relatively simple, but I like the way it plays, looks, and sounds. I finally picked it up in arcade PCB form, still a fun game to mess around with.

>> No.4832302

>>4832295
It's a perfectly fine game. It's simple but, at the same time, there aren't many games exactly like it.

>> No.4832328

>>4832270
Some day I might pick up a PSIO and play The Raiden Project, but if so it'll be a while since console games from that era aren't a high priority for me.

I frankly doubt that the improvements will bowl me over, though. I wish the Genesis version offered two-player support, instant restarts after dying, and the original starting jet sprite, but spending money on a console I'm otherwise somewhat uninterested in for two of those three things doesn't make much sense right now.
>>4832302
It also helps that it's such a short game and that most levels feature new creatures to transform into. I find it a lot less repetitive than most of the beat-'em-up "belt scrollers" out there that people seem to love.

>> No.4832338

>>4832328
It's not the same genre as stuff like Final Fight, really. It's in the style of older brawlers, and it even autoscrolls and loops.

I have no idea why people will defend one of the worst games of its time by trying to say that "at least it's not like modern games" which aren't any worse.

If you actually think any Call of Duty or even non-game Heavy Rain shit is worse than this, you have shit taste in games. You're advocating herpes instead of syphilis, fuck you and your shit taste.

And yes, I played it when it came out, and it was complete shit. In fact the only reason it's remembered today is because the Genesis was an otherwise well liked system and this was about all there was to play at first on the thing. Of course every used game shop had a million cheap copies to push off on unsuspecting mothers.

There were, no joke, AT LEAST 500 NES games that were out at the time and were better. If you're going to compare this to cinematic garbage, then it better be some cell phone game, and even then anybody with a brain would still rather play Monument Valley than this garbage.
