QUICK RUNDOWN ON THIS VIDEO:
This was originally only obtainable through a fun puzzle in one of my videos, and it did not have a download link to the game itself. The guy who found and uploaded the game has uploaded a ton of Japanese PC games into a Mega folder which was only posted in the forums of a private torrent site. In the folder there is a separate folder saying "DO NOT UPLOAD". He claims that if anyone uploads what is in there he will take down the folder and stop uploading games. One of the games in there he has already sold on Ebay, so I'm not sure why it's still in there. I thought the reason certain games were in the folder is because if they weren't they would spread and the value would deflate.

It has been almost a year since Labyrinthe was uploaded and he hasn't uploaded much since then. Just his own copy of Chu Teng, Cosmology of Kyoto etc. shit that is already out there. And Labyrinthe is still in the no upload folder. Last update was April, but the last update before that was October. If he gets pissed about me uploading the link I don't care.

also here is a pic of him being a dick https://i.imgur.com/3Gxg8ZS.png and claiming that some PC remake of an NES game is more interesting than Labyrinthe

I've acquired some... things... from a source, and I was looking to find out what is and is available online currently. I know a few titles in here are if not "lost" then very hard to come by.

But... IMO the dude kinda fucked up big though. I've had run ins with the dude who was hording the shit in the past and I know for a fact that the faucet is going to get turned off due to how Phil at obscuritory handled it. He explicitly left the phrasing in of "do not reupload" in his posts that brought the eye of fucking Motherboard (the Vice website) and now its a /thing/. I think the problem with the reuploader was his desperation to be honest. This is an illegal liar's field, frankly, and none of these games are one-of-a-kind, no-other-discs-exist. What you could have done, to not get this dumper guy so triggered so we can leech off his private dumps, was to simply act like you were just another dumper that just-so-happened to come across these games. Maybe you release what he won't in sporadic bursts, one secret upload per month or every two weeks. Instead, what you did was get media fags to splooge over it as if a game like this is actually good, making the dumperfag feel like he even, for one minute, deserved the attention.

You could've taken the full credit for dumping this, and no one would really care.

Because what is their real motivation to release things? Pure generosity can run thin when you have to deal with beta kiddies crying about other people having things that they don't, expecting everyone else to sacrifice freely while they contribute nothing. Chances are the person releasing the item in question won't even get much more than a thank you or two (if that), or maybe not even find too many people who give a shit about the release beyond simply insisting that it be freely released. What is the motivation to release something if hardly anyone wants to acknowledge the release or the person releasing it? Yes, there is raw generosity, but being generous to whom? Angry strangers on the internet who constantly bitch and moan about not having this or that and how you're an asshole for not giving it to them right NOW... the very same people who, when you do release something, probably don't even acknowledge it? I am absolutely for things being preserved, and don't understand why some collectors are dickheads who try to maintain a laughable aura of "mystery" around themselves, but these things are a two way street. If people treat hoarders/collectors like shit, they will have even less motivation to share what they have.

If people care about preservation, contribute. If you can't afford to buy something unique and rare to dump, go on TCRF or something and find an incomplete prototype article, download the prototype, and start updating the article. I know there's an Aladdin prototype with a ton of differences, including removed enemies and a level that was entirely redone for the final game, which currently has a laughably tiny article. Or maybe those prototypes of Resident Evil that were posted a few years ago?

I remember someone starting a thread on here about the release of a Street Fighter Zero 2 SFC proto getting. Look it up in the archive and see what the response was.

>Why do so many collectors seem like horrible people?

Collectors can be narrowed down to either preservationists and hoarders.

Preservationists are collectors who actually care about the things they collect. They think those things have inherent value, so they want to keep these things around, whether it be pieces of history, physical memorabilia, or simply data.

Hoarders are people like Byuu and the guy from the OP. The only way they can sustain an erection is knowing that they have something that no one else has. They don't believe in inherent value like the preservationists because if they actually did, they would let other nerds dig around in the ROM and then archive it. What hoarders believe is that something only has worthwhile value if there's only a small supply of it (ideally: only one copy, and in the hoarder's possession).

If you can't acquire it either digitally or physically, its effectively "lost" even if there are copies out there.

The west just has preservation more ingrained on our collective cultures to the point that we end up cataloging and preserving works and history that are not our own even. And I'm not just talking about digital, I'm also talking about historical accounts, books, music, etc going centuries back.

I kinda don't care about preservation of games at this point. A while back some peeps would sporadically ask if there was ever gonna be any attempt to archive Flash games. No one ever gave a shit about starting it until someone said, "oh, Flash is going out the window soon". Now there's that "BlueMaxima's Flashpoint" thing which isn't just "download it all now and deal with errors later," they all gotta sit around and make some fancy, biased pack of shit.

It's easier to find pr0n from 2002 than this, because pr0n seems to ironically have more sites to upload and preserve it. There's even some GameBoy loli game I found after trying to find leads on some kind of Jap "bad hack".
http://www.dlsite.com/maniax/work/=/product_id/RJ193852.html

I tracked all versions of it down and sent it to some "NonGood" guy on ROM Shepherd via PM to check it so it could get included (with some other shit). I honestly think that if I hadn't done so, nothing from said site would ever have any kind of proper preservation effort, because everyone's lazy as shit.

I'd ask someone to point out how many game mods have been uploaded to archive.org via a massive pack of them, but there's next to nothing. It's like if you bothered to ask Redump.org, "So, do you guys have a .dat for the official update files for these PC games that were on the official, defunct websites?"

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. No one's going to see you as respectable for hoarding shit - shit that you had no role in creating in the first place. You're gonna get fucked over. whether you deserve it is irrelevant; you're doing disagreeable things that people can easily reverse if you open the door wide enough. at this point he was probably subconsciously asking for it with all the blabbing he did and an actual "do not upload" folder. I've sent at least 2k undatted ROMs to that ROM Shepherd guy, but to be honest, I think the datting can be more of a curse, since no other media has a .dat. It's like, if a .bin/cue is proper CD archival, why do most sites only contain FLAC/MP3 rips of audio CDs? You ironically don't have to "mount" pr0n DVDs.

After the peep who I sent the ROMs started using that accursed DeheadEmAll shit on .nes files, which renders them all useless, I just took it upon myself to be the only Goodset uploader on archive.org (my connection is shit so I didn't attempt GBA or N64). I decided to try mass downloading the Smash Bros. Brawl mods on kc-mm.com using just MiPony, HTTrack (I set it to download individual URLs since some are declared "deleted" with still active links) and a pirated Duplicate Cleaner Pro. I didn't even delete most of the duplicates since it's confusing, but I thought, "well, someone can deal with that later". There's at least 3k+ dead links on that site since it relies on DMCA-happy Cloud Storage.

ClrMamePro would still work fine on the Flash files since they're mostly just solo-files, but I don't even care. If peeps want they could just download all the Street Fighter 4 mods and make a .dat specifically for those since it looks similar. I haven't even played a single Brawl mod. I'm just tired of dead links.

Having a huge archive of Flash games is going to be a bit unwieldy, but they should be able to automate the process and get each Flash game it's own entry so you could search for it directly and play it from your browser without having to download it locally (although the option would be available). That would be a major pain to do by hand, they likely can automate the process on their end.

I also hate how all the No-Intro shit gets uploaded in .zip format. The GoodGB/NonGood archive is in .7z and is smaller than the No-Intro GB pack. It's such a bandwidth strain for no good reason.

I've dealt with with a similar cunt once; the cunt was reselling and got upset when others started pirated what he was reselling because all he really gave a shit about was that it was eating into his hardcore fanbase sales. He then went on to spread a bunch of lies about the original publisher of said content actively seeking legal action against anyone distributing and/or translating said content. Which a bunch of sheep bought into til eventually they could no longer buy into his lies because no legal action was ever brought against anyone translating similar content, ever. The article itself explains that this is a product of Japan's bizarre company based irrationalism.

Home life is very different. Asian countries tend to treat things as very ephemeral, while many people here might live in 100 year old houses, in Japan it's pretty rare for a house to last 30 years. If you happen to own a house, it's likely that you'll completely demolish it 2-4 times within your lifespan.

And because most of the country lives in Tokyo, space is at a huge premium. Nobody keeps their old shit around, and when anything breaks they'd rather throw it out than attempt repairs.

They don't seem to really understand the fear a lot of westerners have about replaying these games in 50 years. All this stuff is still around right now, so they think it'll be around forever. On the plus side, it means you can still get absolute bargains from braindead nips who will sell you a stack of games for a dollar, but westerners have bled a lot of the market dry already because re-selling this shit is incredibly lucrative.

Who knew jews also care about obscure old japanese video games

The amount of idiocy and ignorance on that article and all the retards reacting like mad dogs is staggering.
There very much is an extremely healthy amount of people in Japan preserving all kinds of media and dumping everything they find, you would know if you were in other circles unrelated to vidya.
Trying to make a case on all of Japan because of a single autist or the owner of the ONE Space World proto is fucking retarded.
Acting like an expert on all Japanese culture and trying to shit on all of it because of this, it's always the same kind of people and their inferiority-complex shows every single time.

Like retarded manga & anime? I know how much hentai & pr0n takes priority to archivist retards.

See: ArchiveTeam. They took enough time to rip and upload 300GB+ of FurAffinity to archive.org and even made a page for it on their wiki. None of them give a shit about the freeware titles on freem.ne.jp or vector.co.jp.

Note how much in the preservation sphere, from /r/datahoarder to numerous other factions, how much vidya doesn't get mentioned. There's at least 70% discussion dedicated to pr0n & other shit like Tumblr backups. They make a big ole shit about archiving & mentioning retarded GeoCities which had very little use to anybody and still has next to none. There's no active backups of NexusMods, LoversLab or most any mod site.

Culturally, of course that makes Nips inferior if there's no decentralized preservation sphere for vidya, because what the Prime-Time /r/datahoarder & other scrublets DO waste time doing is making jokes about fucking "Linux ISOs" nonstop and archiving the most uber weeb shit.

It's nice though. Don't worry about archiving the freeware sites and the game mods. We got 10 Doxbin results on archive.org along with Encyclopedia Dramatica, their subreddit and Incelocalypse.

Great shit for archivists to -prioritize-. I'm rooting for you.

Absolutely, d00d. Such a respectable operation they've got going there.

Look, here's what it comes down to. Most of the prolific collectors with rare, unreleased games are well into middle-age. They have the opportunity to pay something forward for the younger generations to enjoy. Do you want to be remembered as an old miser, or the guy who helped to pass along something for everyone to enjoy?
