Plot: Makes no sense until the end, at which point it deliberately makes even less sense.
Localization: Literally makes up text to be edgy and fancy like FFT, making up lines of text in the process. The kind of shit that would have people raging in /v/ threads today. Thank god the english language has centuries of top notch literature so we don't have to read some uneducated localizers trying to make some chink's writing read like shakespeare.
Art: Gorgeous, some of the best on PS1. Too bad you spend the vast majority of the game getting lost in the same ugly basement.
Gameplay: Literally box pushing simulator 2000. That's like a third of the gameplay. The rest is navigating through horrible menus. Most people will get too bored to get past that during their first playthrough. The second attempt is usually thwarted by realizing you'll hit enemies for 1 damage unless you figure out the autistic customization system, or changing weapons every battle to level up their attributes correctly, or, having mastered the attribute system, finding out many enemies have random arbitrary resistances that can only be found through trial and error. Oh, you like that you can damage enemy parts individually? And you damaged an enemy's dominant hand to 0 hp? Well, fuck you, it does nothing. That was for marketing only, stupid gaijin.
Overall: cinematic/10

It's a bit of a tedious slog with a lot of very interesting ideas. Great gear customization and indepth weakness system are awesome. Though I honestly can't be bothered dealing with the menus anymore. Why did you even bother replying if you didn't read my original post? Playing properly requires crawling through menus for gear switching, magic and items to lower risk and such which is a tedious playstyle. You can either have a nice amount of strategy and variety but deal with the game's terribly made time wasting menus or you could go for a mostly mindless combo timing playstyle which gets boring

>> No.4818923

>gear switching, magic and items to lower risk
No don't do this. You're not reading what I'm saying. One or two buffs and you're good to go. Scan if you can't figure out weaknesses, break arts on the off chance your damage type is resisted highly. That's it. No need for risk boosting unnecessarily, no gear switching, no items for lowering risk, none of that shit.
One sword, two buffs. Easy peasy. I beat the game annually doing exactly this. Why you idiots insist on making things harder for yourselves and getting your pringles tingled and blaming the game, I will never understand.

Shocker.

Yes, it's one of the most graphically impressive games on the system, yes, the character models are best you will see in any PS1 game, but the actual fun part of the game is walled behind hours and hours of tedious shit.

The armory is interesting, but god, they should've made that menu move as faster with the amount of time you'll spend in it.

My problem with the game was how esoteric the mechanics were. You pretty much needed a guide to begin to figure out just what the hell you were doing. That's not a bad thing, per say, just wish the mechanics were more spelled out through gameplay.

I didn't get to beat it until years later when I could access gamefaqs, and by then my interest in the story had waned.

It had a lot of press at the time, but it's no different than FFXIII today in that regard. People were upset it didn't have voice acting for example, because it was marketed as looking just like Metal Gear Solid, but that game had voices. It ended up being a disappointment for the gameplay too and people quickly stopped talking about it, but the big fuss about the art and writing is what remains. Some people are obsessed with claiming it was always this big masterpiece everyone played like mainline FFs, while it only got popular in small pockets of hipsters here and there, and remains a deeply flawed game. I bet in 15 years people will claim FFXV was a big success too, with lots of data to claim it sold lots and is in whatever "greatest hits" and "history of Square Enix" collections, even though everyone stopped giving a shit after it released and it simply wasn't very fun to begin with.
