Different anon here. Tetris is the undisputed king. Between all its dozens - if not hundreds - of different iterations it's the best-selling video game of all time. Pac-Man broke video gaming into popular culture, both in Japan and North America, in a way that simply hadn't been seen before and perhaps not since either. I personally wouldn't only exclude Donkey Kong, but I question Space Invaders' inclusion as well.

Objectively false. The most recent sales figures I can find, from, July 2016, had Tetris sales a 495 million units. Now that 2 year-old data dwarfs the CURRENT cumulative pokemon sales by nearly 200 million.
And it absolutely is fair because the fact that they can make Tetris again and again and again and its still a strong seller after all these decades speaks to its influence and popularity. Tetris is the king of video games.

You have no idea then.
Without Space Invaders there is no Missile Commander, there is no Defender. It's the game that introduced the shooting genre to video games.
Donkey Kong introduced proper platforming
physics and powerups.
I think the only other video game as important as the ones in the OP is Pong, and also special mention to Space Wars.

I guess post malone is the most successful musician ever, by that logic. Tetris is by all means a groundbreaking and succesful game, but its importance in video game history ( which i believe is the point of this thread) is not as large as pong, space invaders, pac man, dk, asteroids etc... you think sales mattered at a time when home consoles were not mainstream, instead we actually rode our bikes down to the arcade or laundry mat, where ever the games were. And we played games that way. Tetris wasnt around at the time to make as a significant impact as the others listed.

Let me put it this way, no donkey kong, no sm64!

These are the four games you have been indoctrinated to think are the most important, but they are nowhere close to being the four which have had the greatest impact on the world. I won't narrow it down to a top four, but these games have had lasting impacts on the world culture.

Starcraft
Doom
Mortal Kombat II
Street Fighter II
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Skyrim
Half-Life
Final Fantasy (series)
Dragon Quest (series)
Minecraft
Super Mario Kart
The Legend of Zelda (series)
World of Warcraft
Tekken 2
Resident Evil 2

You'll note a couple of games were not pioneers in their genres, but represent times of peak cultural relevance and impact. Mortal Kombat II was actually bigger than Mortal Kombat 1. Ultima Online and Everquest did MMORPG before WoW, but WoW is the peak of the genre in public interest.

Some games created a lasting effect on people that carried forward into many years. Super Mario Kart was a game that introduced a lot of people to multiplayer "party" Nintendo games. Some games actually had a huge world impact that continues today, but do not get much of an interest from gaming "historians" who actually lack personal history with gaming or have narrow mindsets, Tekken 2 is a great example of this. Tekken was a huge, huge game from the days of Tekken 2 through 3, and still persists in massive popularity in Korea.

Gun to my head the 4 most important games of all time are.

Starcraft: first game to become a national sport
Doom: Made FPS go mainstream, poster child for the violent video game concept
Legend of Zelda OOT: the definitive Ninten-bro game that sent millions of men down the path of lifelong arrested development
Minecraft: the most popular game of all time now by some measurements, and the game that brought video games back from the pop culture identity of everything is either Mario or sex and violence.

>> No.4816960

>>4816948
The only games of actual importance in there are Starcraft, Doom (although I'd argue Wolf3D is the one), SFII, Dragon Quest, Minecraft (as much as I'm indifferent to it personally), SMK, Zelda, WoW. That's it, the rest weren't groundbreaking unless you want to count Mortal Kombat's violence gimmick as a reason, but check out games like Chiller that was released a decade before.

>> No.4816979

>>4816960
Was there a movie version of Chiller that became a summer blockbuster? Did Chiller have stories on the nightly news asking if video games were too violent.

Just because a game does something first does not make it greater. This is not a question of what is "groundbreaking".

Although i agree with you, groundbreaking is not a criteria here. Elite frontier was groundbreaking, but it was never given much thought outside the pc/amiga world. The most important historically is the criteria. Mortal combat is historically important, due to the craze it caused. It brought video game ethics into the forefront as videogames were becoming increasingly more mainstream. Is it not the reason for esrb ratings. That important in video game history.

I won't say they didn't have their impact, but to say they are amongs the most important of all time? I dunno.
Tekken 2, a sequel to Tekken, which was developed by the team who did Virtua Fighter.
Resident Evil 2, a sequel to RE1 (I know they are different in their approach although still the same genre), inspired by Alone in the Dark.
Like, there are priorities in "most important of all time" list. I don't even think any of these games are as important as the games in the OP anyway. Without those, you don't get the others.

I would add Dead or Alive to this list. I can't think of a game that is more emblematic of the idea of cute girls with big boobs jiggling around as the primary selling point of the game. Something that is now a massive chunk of the video game genre.

Thinking some more about it, I would go with Madden as a series in general. I would maybe even go so far as to remove Zelda from my top 4 and put Madden in its place. Sports games are extremely popular far beyond their popularity on places like /v/ would suggest.

Mobile gaming is a huge thing too. I wouldn't know where its would have a representative. It should perhaps as well be on the "count on one hand" list of important titles.

Minecraft and Doom absolutely had massive impacts on gaming as we know it, yes. Minecraft basically spread gaming as a hobby to include literally everybody with a pulse, whereas Doom spearheaded fast-paced arcade action and multiplayer carnage when computers were only known for advanced excel spreadsheets.

I'd swap out OOT with Super Mario Bros. only because that franchise is FAR more popular across the world. Like you said, pop culture identity of everything being either Mario or sex and violence.

Starcraft is a HUGE stretch. Yes it became a huge game but really only in fucking Korea up until like 7-8 years ago. Even then, those pro gamers are a blip on the radar of gaming across the world. I'd swap this out with Everquest. Yeah WoW is more popular now, but Everquest was the first kid on the block that introduced MMO's to the general population. When WoW took over as the chief MMO king, they were just squeezing into a niche Everquest already chiseled out for them.

Space Invaders was the fist mainstream mega hit. 1978. On a totally different level than Pong.

By mid-1981, more than four billion quarters, or $1 billion, had been grossed from Space Invaders machines,[35] and it would continue to gross an average of $600 million a year[36] through to 1982, by which time it had grossed $2 billion in quarters[37][38] (equivalent to $7.5 billion in 2018),[39] with a net profit of $450 million[38] (equivalent to $1.69 billion in 2018).[39] This made it the best-selling video game and highest-grossing entertainment product of its time.

I'm sorry but Dragon Quest needs to be in there. The influence it had on Japanese developers cannot be understated. It's like when guys in early punk bands all talk about how nobody went to see The Ruts or someone but everybody who did started a band the next weekend.

If you look at the Famicom market there is almost a strict divide of pre-Dragon Quest and post-Dragon Quest. After DQ EVERYTHING became an RPG, games that otherwise would be a regular platformer suddenly became nonlinear and had EXP and leveling up for no reason (Simon's Quest, Zelda 2). It's insane.

Wizardry is an innovative game, but it is not an important game. There is a difference.

Was Donkey Kong for Game Boy really that influential? Does it really deserve to be at 106, above Star Fox, OutRun, Pole Position, Gradius, and Mrs. Pac-Man?

I mean I love the game, but as far as I know its only legacy is the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. Am I missing something?

How is tetris important for gaming as a whole? Name great games that were derived from tetris

>> No.4821753

Oh so, it's not important because you don't like it, is that it?
It's the best selling video game of all time and spawned the entire puzzle genre.

The trope codifier

You have before you three series. The first, Series A, was the first known use of a trope, but it may or may not have been intentional. The second, Series B, was the first intentional use of the trope. The third, Series C, does not claim originality, and may in fact have ripped off series B, but was much more popular than Series A or B and is the template that all later uses of this trope follow.

Series A is the Ur-Example.

Series B is the Trope Maker.

Series C is the Trope Codifier.

In other words, if in tracing the history of a trope, one example stands out as the template that many, many other examples follow, that's the Trope Codifier.

Important: "Trope Codifier" does not mean Most Triumphant Example. It means "Example that has fingerprints of influence on all later examples of the trope".

pacman and tetris were huge but not necessarily influential as far other games carrying over and building onto their mechanics
