Can't speak for all of /vr/ but I find it a bit irritating how he's practically indoctrinated a generation of people into memes like "Sega CD was piece of shit" or "Simon's Quest is terrible"

I get that he's a "filmmaker" and a "comedian" but his audience is so young and/or stupid that they take his rants way too seriously. The guy's just sucks at videogames and is making fun of both himself and the games he plays.

The thing is, him and Mike clearly obsess over the games they have nostalgia for. People take them as general "gamers" who surely must have played every game under the face of the sun, but really they're Atari, NES, and SNES fans almost exclusively. I mean watch them play Sonic, James says he's a fan but it's obvious he never played it often as he doesn't even understand the basic game mechanics, and Mike didn't even play it at all, which leads me to believe he never has until just recently

My guess is that, more than hating e-celebs themselves (or at least as much as that), /vr/ hates shitty threads being made about them.
It's kind of like /a/ and Naruto: if that shit had been allowed to be discussed, tons of idiots would have flooded the board with it.
Though here, the situation is a bit different since Naruto actually was a manga/anime (/a/'s subject matter) whereas e-celebs are only tangentially related to video games. Don't expect much discussion about video games in an e-celeb thread.

I've grown to like him over the years. At first the "creative" swearing was annoying and I didn't take note of the creativity outside of the swearing. The SNES/Genesis episode put him in a much different light, same with watching his movie reviews.

Which is funny considering how much /v/ and /vr/ love Arino, who 1.) Is often just as terrible at games as someone like James (to the point where he has an actual team of people to help him beat games or get past hard parts), and 2.) Here's the difference between Arino and c-celeb threads: The Arino threads don't have shitposting, and if they do, it's mostly arguments about translation groups.
There is no "omg ariuno is a cuck!" gossip shitposting. Also Arino isn't trying to sell us anything, while e-celebs are desperate for views, and many of them are likely to shill their own stuff on 4chan and other popular sites.
Also, Arino is not an "e-celeb", he's a legit celeb, and GCCX is a legit video game show with many useful information, many of it is exclusive to it (interviews with devs and so on).

I like him. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I grew up watching him, before YouTube even existed he was out there shitting on games. I personally think he has a lot of charm.

It's grown a little beyond that, but our crew tries to give things a nice breakdown: The things we liked, the things we didn't, the things we've seen done better in other games. The important thing, though, is we're playing a new game every month. I can see him doing that in the future. With notorious bad games mostly being covered, and just forgotten bland bad games being less interesting (even if arguably a lot of his earlier episodes fall in this category) I bet he gets a ton of fan requests now to review some popular good games. But he only does AVGN episodes now if he feels like it, and the best work is always made out of passion, so I'm content with him just doing what he likes. His Power Rangers video was one of the best even if it is a rather recent one.
(Though I bet if I looked up its release date it is probably almost 2 years old already, fucking time.)

Probably the best youtube channel about classic Megaman is GeminiLaser. Dude isn't a speedrunner or anything on that level, but he knows his Megaman, and makes pretty entertaining show-off-walkthrough-reviews (I think that's what he calls them, it's not very clear). Basically he plays stages over and over again and tries to do some silly or interesting shenanigans and then makes a voice over for the best take. He's currently recording for Megaman 8, but it always takes him ages to upload videos, so that series probably won't be complete until 2020+. Also, his earlier videos (Megaman 1 and 2) aren't as good as his later ones. I still come back to his stuff every now and again and binge his entire channel.
