Well I've still got games from my childhood, but I would say the collecting actually started when I was around 10. Bought Conker's Bad Fur Day on ebay with money I earned shoveling and started wanting to get more games that I had missed out on.

i really like the dreamcast. cool original library, all sorts of neat homebrew stuff, and it's cheap as hell too. the clerk at the store i bought it from even told me that it could play burned discs, which i already knew, but it struck me as funny because they sold dreamcast games too.

Technically since around 2005, when Game Crazy was still around, my dad and I got a bunch of systems and games (NES, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast) and Christmas that year I got a windfall of NES stuff from one of my relatives. Played those a ton, moved on, a longtime friend of mine got me back into it around 2012 when the prices started picking up. 2016 I "retired" and sold most of my games and ordered flashcarts. I still collect systems and oddball/cheap accessories and controllers, but I've mostly moved on to vintage computers.

As of right now, big box PC. Very hard to come across, very expensive (damn LGR) but tons of variety in packaging/contents and you can spend hours ogling through the thick manuals, software catalogs, feelies & whatnot.

SNES is my favorite from an objective standpoint, but Genesis/Mega Drive wins out by an inch cause it's what I played the most as a kid.

4 years of collecting, played original console games when I was a kid but had to emulate because my parents didn't want to buy more games for me.
Playstation 1 games are great to collect now that they're cheap but I still collect for SNES as well.
Favorite systems to play are 3DS on handheld and PC because the former got a lot of great ports and remasters while the latter is amazing to emulate games that weren't released in Europe.
Both are great games but my nostalgia is bigger for Super Mario World.
Haven't played Quake enough to choose between it and Doom.
I mainly visit this board and /m/. Occasionally others like /a/ or /v/ but not for long.

Favorite system right now is probably 3DS

Slightly perfer Super Mario 3 over world but don't like either of them much.

I've been collecting consoles and peripherals for about a year. I don't collect games. I've had video games all my life (starting with a Master System II that my parents bought before I was born) but myself and my brother sold our old games unfortunately - that's why I had to start almost from scratch in the past year. I say 'almost' because I fortunately stumbled across one of my original N64 controllers and our N64 games which we must have forgotten to sell.

The only system I've intentionally collected for is the Dreamcast, but I eventually sold off all the games I didn't personally enjoy. But over the years I've gained and given away 200+ Genesis and NES games. Most recently gave a box of 60 loose Genesis games to a friend who appreciated it way more than I did.

Favorite system to play is PC, but console is a toss between NES and Dreamcast.

SMB3 because the levels/worlds feel way more creative and varied, same with the power-ups. Nostolgia plays a part as well since I didn't get a SNES until my mid teens, and only had it for a couple of months.

Doom is life.

/vr/ several times a day. /b/ once a week. /pol/ when I see a shitstorm in the media. /x/ occasionally. /wg/ when the seasons change so I can have an appropriately themed background. i used to lurk /po/, /c/, /co/, and /tv/ but almost never visit those boards anymore.

Mixed feelings. I love both for different reasons. Quake 2 in internet arcades before people could afford computers in the late 90s was pretty fun.

Worth mentioning I don't actively collect much these days but I still love my collection. I use my collection in my spare room in my house to make it feel like I can get away from the internet and the current world and go back to the 90's when I was just a little kid. Quite peaceful after a hard days work. Mostly I just collect cool new board games and play them with the family. Still I like /vr/. It's nice to learn about new things people used to do or their experiences they had with games when they were growing up.
There's nothing quite like getting Earthbound for 5.99 usd from Bestbuy in 96-97 because I couldn't afford Super Mario Rpg, and then going straight home and finding out, oh wait this is an rpg too and holy shit I get to play as a kid too, and now aliens showed up? why am I out so late at night my mom is going to get worried! Oh man my dog is scared.. I didn't want him to get frightened.

beating that game as a child was the most important part about growing up in my own life.

This, earlier gens had a huge amount of games but also a huge amount of trash, understandable because in the early days for any new medium that's bound to happen. With the 5th gen you had a lot of great games on the PS1 but the N64 and Saturn were seriously lacking, they had the quality but not much quantity.
But the 6th Gen it was crazy, just the amount of games being made and how many of them were good. Things sort of peaked there in my opinion with the quality and quantity ratio and it's been downhill since

I actively started collecting around maybe 2004, but before that I started preferring to own games over renting and keeping them over trading/selling when I was maybe 7. At that time I found out my old consoles (2600, 5200, NES) were given away to family friends and their kids without my knowledge and it turned me into a semi-hoarder weirdo.

Right now? Genesis, because it’s probably the cheapest to collect for despite the stellar overall quality of it’s library.

Before recent times though it was mostly handhelds starting with the GBC. Moved onto the GBA then DS/PSP and lastly 3DS/Vita. I play stupid shit on my phone but I’ve never really considered most of those proper games, just solitaire-tier time wasters with waifus as a bonus.
