You can tweak the Q setting to get pixel-perfect webm, with smaller filesize and better colors than gif.

technically yes, though if you do it wrong gif can still lose color palette data and drop frames/etc

>> No.4820347

>>4820325
Both webm or gif can be fucked up, or work out perfectly for pixel art. But gif can only work out if there are fewer than 256 colors in the scene, even if you do generate a custom palette. TG-16 for example can have more colors on the screen at once than 256 (something like 480, some large subset of 512).

You don't make the webm on 4chan, you make it with an encoder and then upload it. You can control the minimum and maximum q in a VP8 encoder.

Here you go. I used a messy rain scene for the sake of argument, because video encoders should have worse performance on a noisy scene. If you'd like me to convert a different gif, let me know. This one is a bit of a joke because the filesize doesn't come out any smaller than the gif, but I used the maximum possible quality (-qmin 0 -qmax 0) again for the sake of argument.

I don't know if you know anything about video encoding, but maybe the idea you are referring to is that vp9 (which 4chan does not accept) actually has a lossless switch built in.

Well that's not lossless, just really high bitrate to the point you can't tell really see the artifacts with the naked eye. When you actually zoom in any given frame you'll see the artifacts all over the place, it can't even keep a flat area straight with the same color value. And yeah I do have that GIF so I went and did the comparison just to be sure.

But pretty good quality nonetheless it does a pretty good aproximation of the original pixels, just not actually lossless quality. And yes I was referring to the vp9 lossless mode, which I'm pretty sure vp8 does not have. Still have no clue why hiroshimoot doesn't let us post vp9.

>> No.4820803

>>4820778
Even lossless wouldn't keep the color values per pixel exactly the same, because of chroma subsampling.
I see your point though. Webm is going to work better for some things, usually longer scenes or things where the background moves, i.e. situations where gif quickly becomes impractical.

I suspect those color variations you are picking up are caused by the rain though, so I guess my worst-case test-case was bad enough to break it down.

>I suspect those color variations you are picking up are caused by the rain though, so I guess my worst-case test-case was bad enough to break it down.
Nah that area is completely flat, there's no palette swapping going on in any of the original frames in that area, no rain actually ever crosses that.

It's just how these codecs work, they're not made to preserve each individual pixel, they work in large approximations. Even if you make a movie with a single static image it won't be able to keep it together.

For pixel art GIF is pretty reliable assuming you're working under 256 colors but over that you're gonna get your image assraped. And if there's actually some pretty heavy movement going on between each frame the filesize will become ridiculous. Luckily APNG is finally starting to pick up steam so at least we won't have any palette restrictions and full 8bit alpha support. Most browsers already support it by this point with, but most websites just don't bother enabling it, out of ignorance I imagine.

>> No.4820863

>>4820828
Lossless with 4:4:4? I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be as good as APNG. Maybe there's a limit to the precision achievable though. Conversion from one 24-bit colorspace to another is not necessarily lossless, even if you aren't losing any bits. You could check it like this other guy is doing to see if it comes out that way.

>>4820836
APNG will also become untenable for sequences longer than a few dozen frames or with large amounts of motion.
I do understand about macroblocks, although I thought setting the maximum quantizer to zero would mean that there was literally zero delta between the input and the output, but the manual does say
>note, however, that these are not real quantizer values just control values
So I guess not, and that's why 0/0 is not actually lossless in VP8 like it is for some other codecs.

In any case, APNG is not yet an option here. Gifs are fine, especially for low-motion scenes like stage backgrounds, but a lot of the ugly looking webms on here are just encoded incorrectly. It doesn't have to look like a splotchy blurry mess, it can have just as much visual sharpness as a gif.

>> No.4820885

>>4820863
Well for me APNG has been a long time coming, I like to do weird animations and GIF is my only way to upload to the web in any standardized way. For the most part I can deal with 256 color limit and make it look remotely presentable if it goes over the limit but the binary transparency system it's so goddamn limiting.

Not to mention working with PNG sequences or exporting to those huge lossless AVI files is such a pain in the ass when you're trying to work losslessly. I'm not aiming to have APNG to make movies and shit, it's just like GIFs, it's for small loops, but of course the typical user will find a way to fuck it up, just like with GIFs and webms

A lot of websites (like imgur) are handling gifs as lossy videos now anyway. I have been interested in webm because it seems like the most capable format that is also "standard" on 4chan (I'm slightly bitter about the demise of flash without a drop-in replacement).
These things are the best "alternative" use I've come up with for it though.
