Essential N64 games? Just busted mine out from the attic, currently have Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Snap (my favorite), Pokemon Stadium, and Kirby 64.
Thinking of getting Smash Bros and Majora's Mask- thoughts? Suggestions?

>> No.4811465

Yeah get Smash and MM.
Also Wave Race 64 and F-Zero X for top tier racing.
Also the Bomberman games.

>> No.4811470

Banjo-kazooie is a must, best Mario 64 clone ever.

Is pokemon snap that good? I tried to emulate it 10 years ago but it had graphic bugs that made it unplayable, maybe I should try now

>>4811470
I can't look at Snap unbiased because of the nostalgia factor, the copy I still play was my first vidya ever- but I'd say it's worth a shot if you like comfy shit and have a few hours to kill (also some really neat secrets)

This bad boy right here.

>> No.4811841

The first party titles and the Rare titles. That's it.

I liked Doom 64 too but something tells me it's not "essential"

>> No.4811848

There is only one essential N64 game: Paper Mario.

>> No.4811851

F-Zero X is the only "essential" N64 game. As in, if it didn't exist, I'd have no reason to keep the system.

Zelda OoT is, of course, great, but you already have it.

>> No.4812321

Ogre Battle, Goemon.. the list goes on..

>> No.4812339

Majora's Mask for sure
Smash Bros isn't essential, it's cool to play just to see the origins of the series but other than that it's nothing special
Just get all the First party and Rare games, and then I think I've heard the best version of Rayman 2 was N64, which is a great game

Banjo Kazooie is great, question is, if you need two platformers though.
The shooters by Rare were great, question is, if you can bear them today.
Blast Corps is a unique game, also it still holds up.
Micro Machines features 8 player simultaneous multiplayer, need I say more?

>> No.4812356

WWF No Mercy/Goldenye/Mario Party for multiplayer shenanigans.
Mario 64/Zelda OoT/Paper Mario for single player
Turok 2/Mission Impossible/Command and Conquer always seemed to be in my 64 when I owned it (barring the other games mentioned here). A lot of good recommendations in this thread OP.

Pilotwings is comfy and fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0cILnAicZU

Castlevania 64 is one of my favorites but its apparently considered the black sheep of the series.

Get conker buddy, i't's so good and so goofy you can't help but love it.
Also check out Fifa 98 and NBA showtime on NBC for some sports multiplayer.

Anon, if you don't really have an N64 library and are interested in exploring it, your best option is to invest in a flashcart that can play every game on the system. Some N64 games go for ludicrously high prices.

>> No.4813487

Mario 64
Mario Party if you have friends to play with.
Paper Mario
Yoshi's Story
Goemon
Ogre Battle
Banjo Kazooie
Conker
Mischief Makers
F-Zero
Pilotwings
Perfect Dark
Goldeneye
Turok
Diddy Kong Racing
Snowboard Kids
Rayman 2
Wave Race
Star Fox
Smash Bros isn't really essential unless you want to see where it all began. If you can get the MM remake for the 3DS, get that instead. It's a improvement over the original in almost every way unless you can't bare the small screen.

If you think the Nintendo/Rare games comprise the only good games on N64, you don't know shit about the library. Midway alone produced a ton of amazing titles.

Ordered this last week. I remember getting stuck playing this as a kid. I'm pretty sure the OP should get this game just for the fact that it inspired open world games.

Jet Force Gemini hasn't gotten a mention. My memory on it is hazy, but it's got strong production values to warrant a playthrough.

Midway was the real best developer on N64.

>>4817652
Don't think that was Midway.

>> No.4818228

>>4817652
Who said anything about body harvest? Try Gauntlet Legends, Quake 2, DOOM 64, Wetrix, Tetrisphere, Goemon, tons more. N64 had a lot of fantastic 3rd party games, they are just overshadowed by the big hitters so people assume they don't exist. Pretty much the same case with every Nintendo platform.

About 9 games.

Do you even play games, bro? All those games are rather unique or were the first of their kind (i.e. Winback is the first cover shooter).

How to get?

>> No.4821582

>>4820341
krikzz lets you buy straight from the manufacturer. The top-of-the-line, 100% compatibility N64 cart runs for $175, while the older model with a couple incompatible games (the only one I can find by Googling is Stadium 2) and a few missing QoL features is a bit over $100, all in USD of course and not counting shipping. When Conker's Bad Fur Day goes for $60 loose it's really not that bad a price.
