The highlight of shining force, for me, is the simple straight-forward combat system combined with the all-star cast you recruit. I really love how many of them you can bring into battle with you as well, and how they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Just started this game for the first time. I'm dumb at tactical JRPGs so I want to make it easier without cheating. When do you first get to an area where you can grind easy battles, and does it take long to make heroes OP?

>the real way to be OP is to hold off promoting to your second class as long as possible
This is the most stupid thing anyone could do in this game.
Promoting your characters at level 20 will cause a massive stats drop, all your characters will die in 1-2 hits, characters that can't wield weapons will become painfuly weak, mages will run out of MP halfway through the battle, it will halt your progress for hours because of how much you will have to grind to catch up with the enemies.
And at the end of the day, there's not even a reason to do that. Are you power playing it? Are you trying to maximize all stats? You won't. You won't ever reach level 99, if you want some extra stats, do yourself a favor and get more post-promotion levels instead.

>> No.4808821

>>4808628
I'm confused.

Are you saying I should or shouldn't promote characters as soon as I can?

I don't care about maximizing stuff, I just want the game to be easy so I can blast through the story and move on to another game in my backlog.

>> No.4808962

Promoting your characters make your stats drop.
The more levels you have, the more significant are those drops.
Promoting at level 10 make those drops manegeable.
Promoting at level 20 will make you too underpowered to the point of the game you will be.
If you want to be overpowered, instead of grinding for levels before promoting, grind for levels after promoting. That's what I'm saying.

I don't know what hes talking about but when you promote in SF1 you lose 15ish percent of your stats which might be relevant but most characters will gain more than 15 percent of something in those extra ten levels. Your magic users also gain more levels towards their learned spells if you hold off. This is particularly noticeable with healers who will very quickly out level the rest of your army if you ever redo a battle to level up your dudes who are lagging behind.

Around the time you should be promoting the enemies actually get easier to take into account your promotion stat drop and one of the enemies you encounter gives a disproportionate amount of exp, enough to level your guys to 20 as soon as you encounter it.

Not him but if you wait until 20 to promote ANY of your characters they will become stronger than they would have been had you promoted them at 10.

However, it's absolutely not necessary to wait until 20 to promote since the game is not that difficult. It's more something you do if you want to pad the game out and see how powerful your characters could possibly get while also getting a little challenge by not promoting when you should have. I have done it at the Kane fight with almost all characters. Also, the advice to grind post-promotion is a little strange since after a certain point you will start getting close to no XP from encounters so you can't continue grinding.

It's fairly easy, do yourself a favor and don't grind until you need to at the circus. The game is much more fun if you can resist the temptation to grind. Seriously, even if all your party dies but you, you can still win the battle and they can be resurrected with gold. birbwarriors are very random, balbaroy is probably the one you want to use.

Stat wise they have good defense and HP but the attack is somewhat low especially without a katana, and with it their damage is consistently about 10 - 15 points lower than your other heavy hitters.

There is only a few maps where having a flying unit is a real advantage and even then you only need one, so its hard to make room for a birb when you could take kokichi or even train up bleu

pointless thought but if the shining force sub-series carried on it would've been interesting to change class. The games have different races so it could be interesting to have combinations.

for example you have elves, humans, centaurs, dwarfs, birdmen
and each one could be a knight, mage, priest, archer. etc.

you could play around, try out a centaur priest or birdman archer.

I do remember some of the FE games did this but the downside is that I didn't want to spend extra time re-leveling up a character for a different class.

Bolt 4 is fucking shit, fuck you Alef.
Freeze is such a nice upgrade from Blaze. It has a better range, it hits harder, and it only costs 10 MP, 2 more than Blaze.
Then it comes Bolt. Same range, slightly stronger, 20 MP. 20 fucking magic points.
While Tao and Anri may sometimes run out of MP before the end of the battle, Alef will always run out of MP halfway through the battle.

At least Bolt 1-3 had a ridiculously huge affect to justify the cost. Bolt 4 hits only one enemy. Whoever came up with this did not think straight.

Give them Heal, Desoul and maybe Blast as an offensive spell
or perhaps give them one of the summons and reinvent it as summoning spirits or zombies etc.

It would be good if this character could turn an undead enemy unit or even spawn one at will but that sounds too advanced for me.

Yeah but that sands fucks everything up. plus I gotta keep everyone in formation disperse so the fire mages don't cook em alive with fire 2. The best dude to tank that shit is ken with his 24 hp lvl 6 but fuck this desert makes everything worse. I can't move my dudes anywhere and by time I get that elf slut tao over to burn the zombies my MC taking massive damage. It's my fault but god fuck this desert I hope I never play on it again.

might be too late but I can only think to recommend to keep you units close at all times, moving each one just a square or two. Then perhaps breaking away when one can attack the mages or just taking the hit.

Muddle, Slow, Desoul, Slow, Dispel

How do you feel about these spells? I tend to avoid using them. My line of thinking is why waste a turn trying a debuff that might not work when you can use that turn to possibly kill a unit. I have heard from other people on forums that say on the higher difficulties they become more useful. I can see that because the hardier enemies make sweeping is less of an option.

Desoul obviously sounds the most useful but like all death spells it's too unreliable to rely on. I remember one playthrough of SH2 I didn't promote Kazin to Sorcerer and I tried using it more often. It became somewhat more effective than I thought. It does help to target multiple enemies of course.

Also I'm not sure on the chances of Desoul working. I can't seem to find an answer.

The SitD manga was translated completely. It shed some interesting light on the difference between what was planned for SF2 and what actually ended up happening.

The SF1 manga was partially translated, then the translator vanished.

The SF Character/World books were mostly translated as well before the vanishing.

People hate Mawlock, and a lot of story additions conflicted with what people assumed/thought was going on DESPITE it being truer to the original translations/supplemental material.

It's not bad honestly, just ignore Cardman and Bug. Use Narsha if you want to break the game even harder.

Recently I started playing Shining the Holy Ark for the first time. It really is very similar to SitD. I really like it with a couple complaints:
>Comfy OST but the generic dungeon track used in some dungeons does get repetitive at times
>Oddly nice-to-look-at Saturn tier low-poly graphics, very pleasing colour pallette
>Animations are nice, but some of the spells take way too long to finish leading to moments in combat that kinda irritate you
>Writing and story so far seems decent even if it's very samey-fantasy. But I do like my samey-fantasy
>Interesting map design for some of the dungeons, e.g. that underground dungeon/sewer beneath the castle had interesting multi-tiered design like 'half-floors'
I will say that at this point the combat's a bit too simple for my liking. Not a lot of strategising to do. But I guess that'll improve later on when you get more characters and monster variety. The lack of customisation beyond equipment is also very SitD-like, though I was hoping they'd introduce some more and make it a wee bit more complex/flexible. But I guess that's the kind of RPG they were shooting for, so I can't really complain.

All in all I really enjoy it, it's just that there are a couple moments that kinda felt like it dragged on. Like some of the dungeons are a bit too big for what it contains, and like I previously mentioned the long animations combined with the kinda high encounter rate does prolong the time you spend in a single dungeon.

I think for Japanese-centric franchises like Shining, SEGA of Japan's attitude is still 'what the local gamers want'. Both the Shenmue remasters and Sakura Wars revival came about as a result of that poll SEGA did which had no translated version despite being accessible internationally. Good news is Shining Force came really damn high in that poll; it was in the top 10 iirc. So there's a sliver of hope there.

About 10 years ago, the people on ShiningForceCentral decided to run this internet campaign to get people to make videos and art about how much they loved the original Shining Force games. Hundreds of people made videos, art, music and letters just gushing over the game, talking about how much it meant to them and how much they loved it. Then they sent this huge package full of all this stuff to Hiroyuki Takahashi, the main guy behind Shining Force.

Unfortunately, it got there on April 1st and he thought it was a prank mocking the series. He vowed never again to make a Shining Force game.

This actually happened.

Played some more of Shining the Holy Ark (I'm >>4886763). Reached the South Shrine, and I must say, I absolutely adore the puzzles in that particular dungeon. So well done. In particular that topsy-turvy floor-ceiling switcheroo bit. Exquisite. Wonderful. Made me think real good and I like that in an RPG. Helps that that place has a lower encounter rate compared to other dungeons, so monsters don't really bother me as much. I'm starting to see why some folks say this is one of the SEGA's better RPG. I'll admit the middle bit with the mountain cave got kinda boring, but it's made up for it with the South Shrine. So good. Looking forward to the rest.

What I heard was slightly different. The SOS campaign angered not the Takahashi brothers of Camelot, but instead it was someone at SEGA, like an executive producer. And another reason he was pissed off was because the insinuation to "Save Our Series" implied the newer games were trash compared to the old ones. Which obviously angered that SEGA fellow since he supervised those new ones. There was this really good and long YouTube video which chronicled the multiple SOS campaigns and their aftermath. Can't find it now, maybe it's been removed. Also don't forget that stupid DMCA takedowns following Shining Ark's release (iirc).

Continuing on from >>4896942, I've reached the East (i.e. final) Shrine. West Shrine was overall shorter and easier than South, but I enjoyed it regardless. Unfortunately the puzzles weren't as good. Just a simple case of finding Turtle Snacks and helping them navigate in the last bit. Far less satisfying than South's. I did like the buildup to the dungeon boss though; fighting off its tentacles as you cross bridges and piers. I will repeat my earlier conplaint that some battle animations (especially spells) take waaay too long. Should SEGA ever remaster this game those animations need to be sped up or reworked.
