Who decided to add random references to Tolkien lore in Symphony of the Night? Did the Japanese version have some of that?

The US version (both of them really, either PS or PSP) suck so much in general. For all the mistakes Konami made on the GBA/DS games (Kali > Curly, mangled subject-verb translations especially for Barlowe's description in OoE) at least they have the credit to have tried a sensible translation. In SOTN the translator was too lazy to research the proper spellings for all of that demonology mythos lore so he made shit up outta his ass.

Take the PS1 version, it went through the poor localization process >>4801615 is talking about, right? Now, picture the localized PS1 version as the new source material, and some other guy who has the same concept of localization as the first translator, is in charge of the PSP re-translation. What you get is basically 2 layers of localization, which I think is a first in any electronic media.

But hey, at least you can put the Japanese audio and you have two other games.

The PSP version is better, it doesn't matter which dub is better, because the PSP lets you opt for original japanese VA and english subs.
Also, PSP ver has some missing content that was on the japanese version on PS1, but was removed from the international releases.
Also, has Maria boss fight and as a playable character (different moveset from the Saturn version though, PSP Maria plays like Rondo Maria)

The PSP version is more of a rewrite of an existing PS1 era localization than anything legit referencing the JP text, except for the few extra lines that were added. It even kept most of the mistakes.
In the end, it neither pleases purists (since it still has little to do with the original JP) nor fans of the awful dub because they want campy dialogue in all games to mock for how shitty it is and then it's supposedly "quality localization".

You can check how they translated the cutscene subtitles in Retro!Rondo in the same collection. That translation is fine but the spelling mistakes are atrocious.

Play it for the extra content if you will.

This game (and other IGAvania's) would've been a lot better if they removed all the grinding. Basically if the player can't level up or grind for special rare items, then the designer can properly balance the difficulty curve.

The original SotN dub is unironically pretty good, only Richter is really that bad. Alucard and Dracula's overdramatic performances perfectly fit the faux-Shakespeare writing of the original translation.

I love how SoTN is full of stupidly overpowered items like Mourneblade, and also Crissaegrim.
Really makes me wish there was a New Game + with a hard mode. Not just for challenge, but also to find yourself against some enemies and bosses where the stupidly powerful stuff makes them last for longer than just a few seconds.
