Breath of Fire IV on the ps1 by Capcom.

I'm not a huge jrpg fan but I highly recommend it. It's pretty interesting as it uses Asian culture and religion for it's world instead of your typical Medieval Europe style fantasy. Battle system is a lot of fun as you can switch between party members every turn and different spells can combo with one another allowing experimentation. Also the story is pretty good with some interesting aspects, in some sections you play as the main antagonist and follow his story to see how he became the way he did and learn his own views. It's a bit rough in some sections as it has padding but it's a great game and I highly suggest it even if for the beautiful art and animation alone.

Completely worth the trade-off, tbqh. The first Metal Slug is more than 20 years old now, and even the subsequent sequels that were released well into the 2000's were able to keep the exact same art style because the sprites have aged so well that they're practically timeless. The games all look phenomenal, and in its own unique way, the slowdown almost adds to the experience because it happens when there is a lot of action the screen; in a way, it gives it a cool "slow motion" effect

There is a lot of slowdown in the first few MS games. Then most of it was fixed in X and more was fixed in 3. From that point on, you'd barely notice any slowdowns.

I honestly didn't even know MS was 30fps until you guys started going on tangents about it every time MS was mentioned. There are plenty more 2D games that run at 60fps that are far less responsive or fluid than MS so I don't know why you think it even matters for a 2D game.

>> No.4800401

>>4800392
Well, the games feel a bit sluggish to me. They're still good, don't get me wrong, but they definitely sacrificed playability for visuals, which is always a big no-no for me.

To add to this, I highly prefer this as a run and gun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCHMsxRLLsg
Metal Slug, again, are pretty cool games, but too slow paced for that genre IMO. Those guys had been doing that stuff since their Irem days (look at In the Hunt, THAT slowdown!)

>> No.4800446

>>4800405
Not to take anything from Wolf Fang since it's an awesome game, but it's fundamentally different since it's an auto-scroller rather than a manual one. For games like those I'd 100% agree that 60fps is necessary but that has mostly to do with the fast scrolling having to be perfectly fluid.

For a game like Metal Slug I don't think it being 60fps would have made the game any less "sluggish", the sprites would still move at a fixed rate as designed by the devs. Slowdown however is another issue entirely and does not have all that much to do with the game being 30fps, plenty of 60fps games have slowdown as well. I do think slowdown is an issue with Metal Slug 2 and parts of 1, although like with many shoot-em-ups slowdown does mitigate difficulty in some areas. For example, a world record holder for Ikaruga didn't like the XBLA port since it removed all the slowdown which made parts of the game like the final boss entirely different.

>> No.4800449

>>4800446
>Slowdown however is another issue entirely
Technically maybe, but it all stems from the fact that they gave the visuals too much weight.
Yeah, Wolf Fang, auto-scrolls, but you get what I mean. It feels way smoother and fun as a result.

>> No.4800454

>>4800449
Then maybe manual scrolling Contra-like run-and-guns aren't your thing? I think games like Wolf Fang kind of blur the line between run-and-guns and shoot-em-ups.(obviously not saying that's a bad thing)

>> No.4800457

>>4800454
Yeah, I like them, such as Sunset Riders (but I prefer regular shoot 'em ups, I guess that shows). Doesn't excuse Metal Slug for being too taxing for the Neo Geo.
My main point is that while they're not bad, they're remembered more for the looks. I guess I shouldn't complain too much since they still manage to be good, it's just that they feel ovely praised due to this.

Well, I can respect that. Copious amounts of slowdown do negatively affect my game experience as well, I just don't think the fps cap matters in 2D quite as much as it does in 3D.

Anyway, let's get back to sprites.

It seems like the limitations of the NG hardware really pushed devs to go for really high sprite counts/good art direction. Capcom did great sprites too but they were much more inclined to cut corners. (case in point: Morrigan in Capcom vs. SNK, she looks laughably out of place due to her unfitting re-used sprites)

When SNK franchises moved to Atomiswave hardware they all suffered for it. Metal Slug 6 still has good character sprites but the backgrounds and zooming effects look awful.
