Why is this game perfect in anything except combat? I cvan't even remember times where there was strategy involved in it even though I still remember memeing a three headed hydra with an invis ring + a haste(?) spell but that's really the only encounter I remember from this game. The puzzles and quests are top notch thogh but I wish it had better combat. Still in my top 3 RPGs tho

Because after Ultima 3, the focus was never really about combat anyway. For fuck's sake, every game from Quest of the Avatar until UW2 made you literally immortal. (With I suppose a minor exception in castle britannia in the last of those games). You can't die even if you want to. They decided instead to focus on things like exploration and NPC interaction and long chains of continuity.

Why keep the combat then

real time combat with multiple characters tends to be terrible, either the AI is infuriatingly dumb or so competent it makes the player irrelevant

Baldurs Gate had decent combat I think but you could pause it unlike Ultima VII(or could you can't really remember)

Beats me. I honestly think the Ultima games could have been done well as sierra style adventure games, perhaps with some tweaking to the format. But at least when I replay them, it's not even "I don't like the combat" it just tends to be irrelevant, something to get through as quickly as possible with as little fuss as you can.

Combat in U7 is clunky. I prefer U6 combat.

There's even a way to easily get the best equipment of the game in the first town, if I remember well.

It's a cheat place. Contains magic weapons/armors, quest items, and teleporters. One of the teleporter leads to the end game place.

Even the non-cheat places (at least, depending on your value of cheating) have some pretty awesome stuff. There's that one chest to the south of Trinsic with like 600 gold and a full suit of magic armor and some magic weapons.

The combat in Ultima 7 barely even exists.

If Ultima 7 had Ultima 6's combat system it would probably be the perfect game.

But even with its crap combat it's still one of the best games ever made.

>puzzles
Levers, box stacking and fetch quests.
The dungeons are very lame.
Inventory management is horrible, it's far too easy to lose crucial items because they get buried by other stuff.
Ultima 6 had a concept of illumination range and line of sight while 7 let you see everything and tinted the screen. Playing Exult in higher resolutions ends up breaking the game due to that.

I paused it by entering the inventory windows and changed the behavior of the companions.

Best game ever.

Origin Systems went defunct in 2004 and I'm pretty sure most of the OG devs are either retired or fast approaching that age.
