Who /heretic&hexen/ here? I love these games. I tried that Heretic high res textures pack on moddb and it looked awful though, I got rid of that pretty quick. Could anyone tell me how to install the Legend: Farewell Edition mod for Hexen on the Doomsday engine? It says add Legend83FW.wad to the Doomsday wads menu, then add Legend83FW.ded to the definitions menu. I can't find a definitions menu anywhere. I feel like such an idiot. I'm a goddamn moron. Silky smooth 5-13 FPS playing this on Doomsday. I just don't understand it. I'm playing on a crappy laptop but the requirements for this should be so low that any toaster should run it fine. It makes no sense, I don't know what the problem is. I set rend-model to 0, set rend-light-decor to 0, then turned off dynamic lights and everything else in the performance options. Set resolution to 640x480 and this 5-13 FPS is the best I can get. Yet I can run F.E.A.R. at medium settings on the laptop. I'm totally baffled. the player view is rendered in 3d with certain restrictions such as at most one floor/ceiling height at a given point - no floor-over-floor makes the automap possible.

on the other hand, the game world, monster movement, collision detection etc. is mostly modelled using only two dimensions, again with certain exceptions such as checking bullet traces or missiles actually hit instead of going over your head.

all of the assets are 2D, monsters, weapons, levels, everything were just 2D assets rendered in 3d. As a result you cannot have multi floored levels without trickery like the Build Engine and later doom engine titles.
Quake's monsters, weapons and levels were all real 3D models. This allows level design to be completely unrestricted and the designers are free to do whatever the hardware can reliably run.

The facehuggers are the absolute worst.
Here they're placed in the shadows and they're so small,they can one shot you too.

All the other answers in this thread are wrong. The engine itself is 3D. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to walk up and down stairs. However the data structure that the levels are stored in doesn't factor in Z values, which is why you can't have room over room.

So, Scourge of Armagon.
Start map and HIP1M1 - crap. Never touching anything from Mustaine again.
HIP1M2 - okayish, but, eh. besides, it's the only level by that dude (Jim Dose) in the addon.
HIP1M3 - typical "Muh subtlety!" Levelord, plays like his Duke maps. More like plays SUSPICIOUSLY LIKE his Duke maps considering Quake has vastly different mechanics and enemies. Yes, I am SUBTLY hinting upon him being a one-trick pony. Still, this map is heads and shoulders above three previous ones, so it's doesn't feel right sort of badmouthing him. Nonstop-decryption of """subtle""" hints telegraphing the traps, coupled with "just oh so" enemy and item placements, that is basically any Levelord map ever is really, really old by this point.
HIP3DM (Edge of Oblivion) - eh? whu? what? the actual fuck? Okay, I am aware of the tremendous historical significance of this map. I am also aware Levelord considers it pretty much the work he is still most proud of. And I don't mean the level is bad. It's a fucking beauty. What I mean is that it's extremely out of character. It doesn't even fucking flow the way his other levels do. There is a sharp divide between HIP1M3 which is pretty much "Levelord's Duke level reskinned for Quake" and this. It simply defies any sort of explanation.

I guess, I'll play other Levelord's levels from Scourge after all. Maybe they will ultimately provide a link.

Oh, I can run and play Hexen perfectly on GZ Doom. The trouble is that I want to play this mod here and it can only run properly on Doomsday. You can load it with GZ Doom or whatever but it'll crash randomly. I suffered through the first level at 10 FPS on Doomsday and it was pretty nice, it's a total remake of it with the levels remade ans all. Yeahh actually you only want to play the Fighter class because the other two are shit. Fighter has the most health and their weapons do as good a job as the other two classes.

The Hammer is kinda like a low grade rocket launcher and the Sword is the best weapon in the game (alibet expensive to use).

Also Slot 0 weapons dont count as weapons.

After going through some of the weapon mods I've download, I think you might be looking for Complex Doom and Eriguns 1. Things you might look into but not sure if they fit your criteria are: Doom RL Arsenal (DRLA), Weapons of Saturn, Accessories to Murder (doomnukem), and Psychic. I know you said you wanted something different but SmoothDoom really does have some great animations as well. All of these should work well with enemy replaces.

The fighters 3rd and 4th weapons are inferior to the cleric and mage's, but the fighter's first 2 are way better than the others' first 2. The cleric's first is absolutely horrible and his second is just okay (its basically the wand but slightly better), while the mage's first is okay (useful but tedious & unsatisfying) and his second is bad (not very powerful and makes enemies freeze in your path). The fighter can kill a centaur in a few punches or a couple swings, while the others will spend all day shooting gay little magic missiles at him (and occasionally getting hit by the reflections).

Centaurs can't reflect the Sapphire Wand or Arc of Death, not to mention Arc is the strongest tool in the game against Centaurs. Hell, Arc of Death is one of the strongest weapons in the game. I know centaurs cant reflect all ranged shots, but they can reflect the serpent staff and frost shards, which you will be using for quite a bit of the game as a cleric or mage. And yes the arc of death is great, but I was talking about how bad their first two weapons are.
Frost shards are okay in terms of damage output but it freezes enemies in place, which is a serious bitch in Hexen's often cramped levels, forcing you to switch back to the wand to shatter them.
To me running up to the enemy and bashing them is a lot more satisfying than shooting weak pellets from afar, even if it's more difficult.

The only thing redeeming about the Cleric is his flechettes which release the poison cloud, I mean these stunlock the hell out of centaurs, but you can be hit by it too. His flaming glove shit sucks, the wraithverge is overrated (and expensive), and the mace is like the fighter's punch. The poison staff is okay but at some point you will run out of that blue mana and be forced to use that stupid fucking glove.

Mage stuff is okay but the Bloodscourge is underpowered and sad. It has seeker projectiles which is the only thing good about it. And like someone mentioned the Centaurs will deflect most of his projectiles.

His flechettes are awful too, practically useless. At least the fighter can toss a bunch of them and they explode, the mage just drops them on the ground and they're timebombs.

The fighter's hammer can at least hit fuckers up close even if its out of mana. And the Quietus does 500 damage per attack, not my problem if you're not able to land all of them.

The Axe can hit without mana too for that fact, it just does more if it has mana. The Axe is about the only weak point in his arsenal because its more dakka of what his fist already is, it doesnt do anything else like toss spectral throwing axes (it woulda been great to duplicate that from the axe knights in heretic). However the effect this has is when you finally see that Hammer you suddenly cream in your pants.

Serpent Staff will *never* run out of ammo, the game feeds you blue mana like air. Firestorm is good but it feels a bit inconsistent. I swear I can kill a centaur with it in two shots in one instance and then the next centaur takes six shots. Probably has something to do with the Firestorm's real strength: those little fire balls the spawn around the initial target. Those are the meat and potatoes of the spell and they don't often hit smaller enemies.

I just want to point out, older fps games used the most generic tropes imaginable for their settings and characters. Before people get pissy, my all time favorite game is DooM. My favorite genre is sprite-like shooters. Facts are facts, they used the most distilled of plot/setting/character/etc that were tried and true because it was the least amount of effort with the most guaranteed easy fanbase. There was also less chance of being compared to another game if you did so.

DooM - in space and hell
DooM 2 - on Earth (destroyed) and hell
Blood - in cult like locations and cemeteries
Shadow Warrior - in cultural appropriated asia
Duke - Alien overrun big cities (They Live)
Hexen - medieval high fantasy
Heretic - LOTR plus undead
Powerslave - Egyptian
Strife - medieval sci-fi
Wolfenstein - Nazis
Half Life - Science facility (for 95% of the game)
Turok - Dinos
Quake - Dimension traveling

Don't get me wrong. Some games overlapped what was already out, but it was still a core concept with a slight twist or just that core concept cranked to 11. Even Unreal 98 which was made fun of for copying other games out there, was just a core concept with a twist. Honestly that is what made a game like Strife stand out, but more specific Deus Ex and System Shock stand out. It was a core concept with mechanics that made it more than a fps, which most of the games I listed don't do anything close to diverging from FPS with distilled plot/character/motive

What is with the way arenas/slaughterfests kind of creep in as a way of taking over levels? Some love them, others hate them, some only like them if they're expecting them.
I've noticed too that some modern "retro inspired" games seem to think it's just lots of slaughter arenas, Doom 4 did this in it's later stages, the anon who posted the Hellbound trailer it's in there, Serious Sam does it too.

My best doom experiences are in things like Episode 1/2 of Doom 1, great experiences in those battles and none are arenas. Computers at the time couldn't even handle slaughter maps.

To use my own map as a frame of reference, I have "large fights in big areas" but am trying to see where the line goes from that to "slaughter". Of course bigger fights are a way to increase challenge but I don't want the player to think it's become a meat grinder.

I've just finished Suspended in Dusk for research, there is no slaughter in that. About to start Ancient Aliens soon for more research.

Ways I can envision.

The cables in his stomach always made me think that there are more cybernetics to him than just an arm and a leg: most of his inner body has been mechanized. The rockets are stored in his torso and then transported through the arm into the cannon when firing. Which is also probably why he explodes so violently when you kill him, all the rockets stored inside him detonate.

Looked it up and apparently the creator re-made it on UE4. It looks horrible in my opinion, but it has mostly good reviews.

Mods? Dunno. Not many gameplay mods for these games. Brutal Heretic is a thing, as is Wrath of Cronos, but they are not essential.
Caldera map pack for Hexen looks pretty cool, though, even if it's a bit incoherent. If you like big maps, being forced to use artifacts, and missing important switch buttons , then Curse of the Gods is good. Maps are very beautiful there.
