Nah, they're their own thing with a particular appeal. They are very good but don't "blow away" the others. Now, if the market was full of Ikaruga clones or something then maybe, but it's not the case.

Mate, the fact that they are so unique is why their shmups are the greatest, along with having superb level/enemy designs for a vertical shmup. Also, Gradius V is one of, if not the finest horizontal shooter of all time.

I agree, their games are good, but the fact that they are unique makes them not directly superior to other games. RSG isn't superior to Truxton since they play very differently, for instance.
They aren't "direct improvements" in a sense.
