How come they make dq games so simplistic? Like they ramp up the difficulty but make everything else simple.

>Muh charm!
I guess but what's the point?

I tried the first Dragon Quest, and really wanted to enjoy it, but it's WAY too grindy, and from what I've heard the series never really gets better until 7.

You heard it wrong. DQ3 is still one of the best RPGs ever made. It was a huge improvement over what the original DQ and it's sequel accomplished.

Because it's comfortable. What's wrong with that?

Meh I'm just gonna stick with Final Fantasy. Nobody who isn't a huge weeaboo even cares about DQ in the west.

DQ1 Is in a way really different to the rest of DQ. Also, it depends on whether you played a remake or not.

Nah I was playing on original NES.

I did some grinding, got up to level 9, leather armor and hand-axe, went to Garin's grave and spent about an hour mapping out that dungeon, got the silver harp, and then basically just quit right after getting out of the dungeon because that was when I realized the game was more frustrating than fun. I could have gone to the dragonlord's castle for some endgame grinding and probably finished the game in a few more hours, but meh.

And like, just for reference, I actually really enjoyed Final Fantasy 1. That game is a little rough around the edges, but not in any way that detracts too heavily from the game. The dungeons are fun to explore, combat is engaging, you have a wide selection of spells so there's always a number of different ways to approach a battle so it never feels too repetitive. Dragon Quest 1 is just the epitome of "attack, attack, attack, attack, heal, attack, attack, attack, attack..."

right, we heard you. You don't like it. What else do you want from the thread?

Dragon Quest 1-3 form a really good self contained trilogy. If the first has REALLY put you off then fine but you're missing out.

I dunno, I really like Jrpgs that go out of the mold but there is something compelling in the simplicity of DQ3 that kept me playing
