yo, could anyone here please be kind enough as to take a look at this version of smooth doom I've been tinkering with?


I'm having an issue with the plasma gun where only its pickup sprite is displayed onscreen and I have no idea as to what might be causing it. I've done nothing but double-check sprite names for a good quarter of an hour and everything's fine on that end. my bet's on gzdoom itself shitting the bed, delta touch was only recently updated too and it happens there as well.

Which mod has the loudest and highest recoil weapons? That High Noon Drifter is pretty good about that with the shotgun, super shotgun, and revolver having a nice loud sound and kick to them. Is there a fixed version of the Ketchup v5 no gibs? I've got the fixed version of the it standard but I need the no gibs version to load it with Shades of Doom, the monster skin randomizer, not the Doom for the blind one. As it is I have to use v4 and that one for some reason has no entry in the options menu to change the blood amount or enable janitor. In v5 every enemy I shoot produces random gibs when shot and that's not right because without Shades of Doom it works properly. It's something about the decorate blood text file hitting a wrong character on a line.

I don't know about that. I never figured that startan or those hex tiles were supposed to be that shiny. It doesn't have to do with dynamic light placement, rooms need light, and if you have a shiny surface, then there is going to be a weird sheen somewhere.

In real life most surfaces are not very shiny because it would just create glare and reflections everywhere. Especially not inside buildings, with the exception of maybe hotel lobbies or something where they can afford to have the floor waxed regularly. There is a reason that shiny stones are considered rare and valuable, they just don't occur that often in nature.

Spamming PBR materials everywhere is equivalent to Doom 3 graphics. They made everything shiny just to show off the tech but now it looks tacky. Don't just do stuff just because you can. But you know, I say that and yet people will still probably want to play your mod just because it looks less dull than vanilla.

Thanks man, I'll get some use out of that. I appreciate it. It didn't fix my problem but I can use it for other things. My problem is this thing pops out that hits the ground and becomes a blood splat. It just doesn't look right and it's the same one every time I shoot an enemy. If I shoot them with a shotgun three identical blood things pop out and become splats when they hit the ground. I thought it was a gib bug but it must be something with the blood. Ketchup v4 doesn't have this problem but I can't increase the blood amount in that since it adds no options for itself to the menu. Ah well, it's not ideal but I'll just have to use v4 as long as I'm playing with Shades of Doom.

So I made a Scourge of Armagon longplay because I love this expansion to death. Tried it a few weeks ago after many years and it totally blew me away. The map gameplay flow is so damn good, great use of enemy combinations/placement, just all round fantastic level design. I would also suggest separating pickup items from the weapons. Make a CustomInventory pickup item that gives you the weapon in its pickup state, and gives you the ammo to go with it (this also cancels all inheretance from modded or vanilla weapons so you can fully customize them from the ground up, because their weapon-status is replaced with becoming a custominventory).

Spawn states for weapons is an awful legacy that zdoom started with which the community should distance themselves from.

Champions is great for pretty much anything because of how configurable and universal it is, same goes for legendoom lite. Shades of Doom is basically as vanilla as a randomizer can get, since the randomised monsters don't behave at all different from other randomizations of the same monster. It's completely cosmetic and I don't really get the appeal of a randomizer with no gameplay changes, but to each their own!

Champions, and it spawned a Gold Pinky demon. Doubles their stats, halves their movement/attack speeds. Gold enemies then spread their Gold status to all nearby foes, which hit a Cyberdemon. The Cyberdemon's Champion status then mutated as the only enemy of the group to mutate, giving it a shield that stops it from being damaged and reflects projectiles back that keeps turning on and off. It was basically a clusterfuck of improbability that made an enemy I wasn't prepared for, I had to dodge him and leave him as the last enemy standing.

Then E1M7 spawned a Spider Mastermind on me, though I could cheese that.

Huh, I decided to try that "Hell on the Earth" (yes, that's what it's called, I don't think the creator's first language is english) Doom 2 map 'remaster' thing thanks to that high-res crap anon. Under all the sweetfx bloom and stuff the maps look kind of interesting.
Trying it with Beautiful Doom, I actually quite like it. I'm a sucker for atmospheric stuff, and the dark, moody lighting pairs well with the brightmaps and heavy use of dynamic lights. I'm a bit iffy on the colored lighting on some places, and I don't really know if the level design changes are going to stay as subtle as they currently are, (in terms of actual changes to how they play, not just cosmetic things) but I quite like the novel usage of modern sourceport features. Like 3d water in certain areas. The area where you get the blue key in MAP02 is now almost completely flooded. Your head isn't submerged, but it's still up to your neck. It's the little things.
Pic is map03, since I forgot to take pictures beforehand. Turns out that you can actually subjectively improve how things look, at least to one's individual tastes, without making things look horrid to everyone.

So I've been thinking - if some of those gameplay mods like Cyberrunner and Booster give the players a ton of mobility to the point where they can potentially easily break a map's intended path or even get stuck, what about a mod that grants a lot of that power but is deliberately a lot more dialed back in arsenal? Like say, you play as a ninja or what have you who has a kit that can still fight back (since you obviously won't be able to pacifist everything), but encourages players to skip sections of maps in some way or another in order to win.

Only problem I see would be trying to make standard combat not defeat such a purpose but not making it an annoying task, and implementing map-skipping tools in a fun way.

PBR (emphasis on the physically based part) used here is going to have problems unless the light/environment values are also more physically based. Since you'd then be left with some very high values, a tonemapping post effect should also be put in to reign in those values and give a more appropriate look.

Oh gosh, that is horrible.

The trick to fixing the tiling it is to overlay two or more of the same texture on top of each other and scale subsequent ones by a decently large prime. This way, the waves will have a very low chance of being periodic and will resemble noise.

Non-transparency cannot really be fixed properly in gzdoom as it is. You need to simulate refraction to make it not look like crap, and the renderer would need some serious work to be able to handle multiple passes like that.

Decided to replay Scythe 1.The maps are really well done there were some slaughter maps,but nothing too bad.Then Maps 23 and 24 came in.
I died several times and I despise them,you have to do everything in hurry and you're surrounded by enemies everywhere,it doesn't give a moment to breathe.

Better yet if I can check to see if it has that "Dropped" flag I can tweak it even more. Make the shotgun spawn a shells object right on top of it, and if it doesnt have the dropped flag it will spawn two packs of shells. TNT basically takes the new monsters (and textures) that Doom 2 provided, and makes a largely much more interesting and memorable campaign.
It's not flawless, in fact the last third of it falters and here's where some of the bad maps are, but mostly they're cool and interesting.
It has its own soundtrack that's extremely well fitting, and despite being designed by a handful of different people with no actual set goal for design or theme, the stylings of the maps feel mostly pretty coherent as if they did.

Plutonia is much more consistent in quality, though it is also a much more challenging campaign. It's not the hardest ever, by any means, but if you ever found yourself thinking "Gee, Doom's kind of easy", then Plutonia will change that attitude, prepare for some really intense jungle combat and temple fighting. Some argue that Plutonia is one of the best entries in classic Doom.
Watch out for Revenants and Arch-Viles.

I don't greatly dislike it, but I can tell you this:
A.) they give you the Super Shotgun way too early and on a silver platter practically, and since it overtakes many other weapons in damage output and capability, it kind of makes it feel really unbalanced despite being such a good weapon.
B.) almost to around half the maps, especially Sandy maps, aren't very good. When the game's core gameplay is defined by map design working with carefully placed encounters and item distribution mixed with the areas you fight in, Doom 2 fails to really keep a consistent quality for this altogether. Some maps are great, but there's way more misses than there should be for the overall package.

Yeah the SSG's placement in the game always bothered me. I also dislike around half the levels but I don't feel like I can adequately explain why. I wish the game was separated into chunks like Doom 1 so I can more easily skip to the later chunks of the game. Most of its new enemies are fine but it abused chaingunners in higher difficulties and Pain Elementals are the worst.

Well, it has a shitload of good new assets, all the new monsters lets Doom be far more complex game than before. Archie and Revvy both have unique behaviors that can completely turn an encounter on its head compared to the Doom 1 monsters, Fatso and Mini Spidey also bring some different situations for you to work with, along with Low Sugar Baron, who works as a great middle of the road cannon fodder.
Meatballs are good at making themselves a priority target and jumbling up a fight completely, and Chaingun Sniper is either a horrible nuisance, or a wonderful asset, depending on where he is.

However, the actual levels of Doom 2 is a hell of a mix. There's some really good levels in Doom 2, but there's also some pretty mediocre or even substandard levels. Most would say the first 'episode' of Doom 2 is the strongest part, with levels then largely going down in quality after that, seldom getting as good again.
Also I agree that they give you the Super Shotgun too early, because it's a stupidly powerful weapon for how much ammo you can carry and is available. IMO it should appear in like Map 11, where you have to fight that arch-vile first to get the key, and then the Super Shotgun

However, even the weaker maps of Doom 2 have the occasional good parts or interesting things going for them, and if you're a mapper, there's a lot you can learn by studying all of Doom 2, even maps considered poor.
Overall, most who criticize Doom 2 wouldn't say it's a bad game, but it's a flawed game, a flawed game that gave the community lots of wonderful new assets to build campaigns with.
