Earthbound it's the best on the series imo

Mother 1 it's really good and has a really big overworld for it's time but it can be full nothing at times leaving no much reason for exploration and the setting it's pretty good, rural towns and cities was pretty unique and nice, I really liked how the plot wasn't show in your face until the very late game

Earthbound may be way more linear than Mother 1 but it was an overall improvement, the setting of present time while keeping the bs at minimum was pretty good and has yet to be done again, of course it gets some exotic areas but that's around the endgame

Mother 3 of course has the best story and bow to the series, but holy shit they went full bs with the setting, the only parts of the game that still have the atmosphere of present time of the two past games are the beginning of chapter 4 and chapter 8.
Also fuck chapter 3, It really didn't add much to the story aside from Lucas getting involved at the end, and it was tedious as fuck too, worst part of any playtrough, I get that Earthbound kinda did this with Jeff but holy shit mother 3 did it 3 times with almost everyone

Mother 1 (or Earthbound Beginnings, whatever) is good, but it's clunkier than the other installments since it's a NES RPG. Get the 25th Anniversary/Faithful Edition if you're not getting it from the Wii U VC.

3 is fantastic and my personal favorite in the series, but it's sort of a departure in terms of storytelling, being much more direct. Whether that's up your alley or not, give it a go, it's still damn good. It wasn't released outside of Japan so your only option is the fan translation.

I just beat it for the first time recently as a person who doesn't play RPG's outside of the Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi series.
The combat becomes fun when you start getting more PSI abilities and party members, and the music, story, and visuals keep you invested the whole way through.

Not that guy, but Mother 3 is heavily inspired by a novel called The Notebook. Which is about two brothers, Claus and Lucas, who spend their childhood and puberty in a small city by the border of two regions at war, presumably WWII according to the writer's age and experiences, and probably located in some eastern-european country. It's never really stated in the book where the kids are or what year it is, because the whole book is like a diary of these two kids, and their own rules to life. It's pretty brutal though.
If this is book is anything to go by, it could be either a nazi or a communist regime, but again, it's never really stated. Giving the possible location, it might be communism, but it doesn't really matter, the point is that there is a totalitarian regime and there's war.
In Mother 3, the whole Pig Mask army is revealed to be led by Porky, could you say he's of any particular political view? If anything he was capitalist in Mother 2, but ultimately, in Mother 3 his mind has already went through many possible millenia of traveling between time lines. Playing around, like a kid with toys. I don't think there's any ultimate deep political critic on M3.
If anything, Porky is very similar to a character from another book that also inspired the series, The Sirens of Titan.
Given Itoi's personal life, I would guess he's more of a leftist, but I'm not entirely sure. He definitely made some political statement against Japan's own government during the 80s though.

This couldn't have come at a better time. I'm about to start Mother 1/EB0 and I'm a bit confused about the patching. I used the latest hack available on RH.net which (supposedly) applies all of the enhancements of Mother 1 25 th anniv. Edition but also decensors NOA changes AND keeps the original map, font, character models and the GBA re-translation from Mato which is universally praised.

But...it doesn't seem to work. Or does it? Because i patched the GBA version and ran both and the script is clearly different. I'm trying to play the NES version with the best translation and connections to EB1 (which i'm gonna play right after)

They could have "gotten away with it", in the same way Rockstar Games "got away with it", although Earthbound might have become even harder to find than it is today.
But it'd be yet more controversy to a medium that already wasn't high budget, and nobody wanted that shit. Not Nintendo, not anybody.
