Is the Lunar franchise as linear as Grandia?

After the two Lunar games were my favorite 16 bit rpgs I was really looking forward to Grandia. Both are linear, but something about Grandia ended up being incredibly boring. A game about the thrill of exploration, when every dungeon is practically just a winding path with little to explore was quite a let down.
