This video shows how to reduce the noise of the Dreamcast by lubrication.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtSA6yamcMI

Lubing the laser sled track and plastic gears does help to reduce the seeking noise of the drive however the constant spinning noise is still present and annoying.

Is there a way to lubricate the drive spindle motor as well? How do I reach into there?

Is white lithium grease the correct lubricant to use? What if I use teflon spray?

Remember that half of the noise also comes from that small fan on the right side.
Especially now that those consoles are old and the fans are worn out you would need to replace it for the console to actually stay quiet.

I gotta agree with this. I'm usually in the "Dreamcasts are reliable" camp but muffling their gears with thick grease isn't going to prolong their life span.

If the sound your consoles make actually annoys you the best way to fix this is to keep them in a sound dampening but we'll ventilated cabinet as far from where you sit as possible

The worm gears, and rails of a CD unit are worth cleaning and re-lubricating if the machine has accumulated a lot of dust of over the years; especially if the system was factory lubricated with lithium grease (PC engine CD drives are often a fucking mess)

Tayama makes a ceramic grease that Japanese console repair guys love. Can't buy it in Canada because it's toxic or some shit, but easy enough to get on ebay.

The point is that if you eliminate a Dreamcast's natural clicks and whirs through "lubrication" you're making it work harder and reducing its lifespan notably moreso than the few extra reads that using CDRs cause.

Oh my. No dude, a thin layer of white lithium grease makes it easier for the parts to slide. All drives come shipped with some on the rails and gears dummy and replacing it extends the life of the drive. Yes even the dreamcast drive.

You must think the grease is sticky or too thick or something but I assure you it is not.

You mean the motor whine? This is connected to that. Reducing any plastic on plastic friction with lubrication will be good for the motor in the long run.

>> No.4777274

The big gobs of thick grease shown in OP's video are absolutely not the right approach for lubricating an optical disc mechanism. It requires something far less viscous, applied very sparingly.

Cabbage Pants is actually correct for a change, dampening the sound in this way is going to wreck things in the medium to long term.

>> No.4777352

>>4777274
Yeah, the guy in the vid is doing it wrong but the right amount of the right kind of lube wont "wreck things".

I use white lithium which is ok for most things but there's some Teflon stuff that is supposedly even better for the laser gears.

>> No.4777403

>>4777352
POM plastic commonly used for these types of mechanism is virtually self-lubricating.

All I'd want to use is a drop or two of liquid silicone to help it along and eliminate any remaining frictional noise.

>Teflon stuff that is supposedly even better for the laser gears
Krytox? It's expensive but it's basically a liquid analog of Teflon, a nonreactive fluoropolymer grease, and also contains teflon for thickening.
It's extremely nonreactive and no common solvents will remove it, also if you have any residue on your fingers and then go smoke a cigarette you will literally die because the heat converts the residue to hydrogen fluoride which you then suck straight into your lungs and on contact with the moisture in your lungs hydrogen fluoride becomes hydrofluoric acid
Technicians do in fact die from this sometimes

>muh burned games burn out the laser
kys

>> No.4778326

>>4778294
I wouldn't expect a kid like you to understand, but the burning laser needs so much output power to denature the dye layer in submicrosecond timeframes that it leaves the substrate pits in a high flux state. The dreamcast uses an extremely finely tuned laser and when it strikes these substrate anomalities, transitive phase structures are inbound by the photonic influx and the return beam is diffracted to a resonant wave higher in peak energy than the emitted pulse due to diffraction ring interference, and over time this causes interstitial ablation in the pickup lens and which results in stratified delamination via the pillsbury-biscuit effect

>> No.4778340

>>4778326
Huh....weird how you claim burned games use more power, when the laser power can be manually adjusted on the drive itself.

>> No.4778348

>>4778340
Not him but he's saying the laser beam hits the burned disc and come back stronger than it was before because the burned disc has a lot of laser energy absorbed into it from the burning process and it blasts apart the pickup lens over time

>> No.4778503

>>4778348
>>4778340
you're both illiterate, what he said is the diffraction creates interference patterns akin to the double slit effect which results in a sawtooth intensity waveform if it were to be viewed on an oscilloscope and it's the peaks of the sawtooth pattern that damage the pickup lens over time because the laser intensity is detected by the root-mean-squared method but the peak intensity is far higher and damages the optical resin of the pickup lens.

your mechanic is going to love you for this especially when the silicone grease ends up working its way into the combustion chamber and the high pressure hydrocarbon fire with its rich-running mixture required by the three way catalytic converter results in the silicone grease turning into silicon carbide grit which results in your cylinder linings being rebored on-the-fly

The spindle and sled motors supplied with the dreamcast are cutrate pieces of shit, and should be replaced by more modern motors

This is a drop-in replacement for the sled motor:
https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/nmb-technologies-corporation/PPN13PB11C2/P14356-ND/2417080

It is a brushed motor, and is FAR quieter than the original one, and requires no lubrication.

The spindle motor can be pulled from any existing 12x-24x CD Rom drive, and is a simple 2-wire interface. Any of them will be better than the one the DC shipped with.
