What is the best port of Outrun? I've tried the genesis version but its surprisingly shitty. Is there a better one?

3DS or Saturn.

Sega Ages OutRun on the pS2 is criminally underrated. Yeah the remade 3D models look kinda shitty, but the game runs smooth and plays great.

Yu Suzuki Game Works Vol. 1 on the Sega Dreamcast is worth looking into as well. So is the port on the Sega Saturn.

Best ports are Saturn and 3DS, but I'm going to shill the PC Engine port again. It's better than the Genesis port, and the music sounds great on the PCE sound chip.

I think the Genesis port is still pretty good. I love Step on Beat and the "deeper" sounding Last Wave.

Saturn or Cannonball, as others have said.

Saturn for arcade perfection & bonus 60 FPS mode

Cannonball for PC arcade emulation, with more unique options for video/playability

Eh. A modern analog stick works just fine, and the gear shift is just a digital toggle. I admit that a DFGT (the one with the sequential shifter attached) does improve the experience, but it's perfectly playable with a gamepad.

Obvious choice, especially if you have a steering wheel.
>Saturn
I haven't played it but the general consensus is that it's very good. Plus it has the remixed songs
>Dreamcast (Yu Suzuki Gameworks / Shenmue 2)
This one is near perfect, it has analog controls for direction (stick) and pedals (triggers). the only problem is the complete lack of configuration settings.
>3DS
Easily my favourite, it's basically the original but better (60fps, widescreen, 3D effect) and with a lot of extras (unlockable car improvements, new original songs). Of course you can disable all of this if you just want an experience that is close to the original.
>Augmented reality
There's only one in the world and you probably won't ever be able to play it, but I'm just dropping it here because the concept is absurdly cool.

pc engine port sucks
Genesis version is extremely arcade-accurate for the hardware, barring framerate.
PCE version is uglier and has worse audio (in particular, it has the worst engine noise).
also, the PCE can't even draw the road split right

>> No.4777747

>>4777618
PCE isn't AWFUL, but it is worse than Genesis. It's at least better than the Master System/Game Gear. Arcade purists only claim that Genesis is the worst because the car is slightly different, which makes no sense to me

>> No.4777818

>>4777747
Man, MS/GG Outrun would almost be playable if it weren't for the awful way it handles slopes in the road. It's so fucking jarring.
also, arcade purists hate the Genesis version because it's only 20fps (which is only 10fps lower than arcade, only the far background is updated at full framerate... but the lack of scaling on Genesis just makes it look even choppier)

>> No.4778851

>>4773509
Stay in high gear and ease up on the gas during tight turns. If you don't crash at all you actually have quite a bit of leeway with how much you can slow down and still finish in time. The only stage I still have trouble with is Ending C because the road is so narrow there

>> No.4778854

Hey outrun experts, I've always wondered is there a tangible detriment to grinding the gears by shifting without taking your foot off the gas? It's an unappealing visual/audio feedback but I can't tell if it's any slower than shifting correctly

Expensive, the Pro version (which has the mounting for the monitor attached) is about 1700 euros. and then its like +100 for an extra piece that lets you hook up a stick shift on the side.
Also.. its 100 extra if you want it in black.

So about 2000 euros for the whole thing in black, but thats without monitor.
expensive toy, though you might be able to find a used one since they're pretty big and once a fellow gets married they often have to admit they didn't use it as much as they thought so out it goes in favor of a room for the upcoming baby! :p

>> No.4780439

Man, I really fucking wish the Saturn version let you map gear-shift to C. Got stupid used to it from playing on Genesis and on 3DS.
also, is it just me, or is 60fps mode on Saturn smoother than Cannonball?

Cannonball is a program which allows you to play an enhanced version of Yu Suzuki's seminal arcade racer, OutRun, on a variety of systems.

Cannonball is not an emulator; it is a complete rewrite of the original game into portable C++.

Smoother 60fps gameplay
True Widescreen Play Mode
Force Feedback support
Custom Track support from LayOut
New Game Modes (Continuous Mode & Time Trial Mode)
Many, many more enhancements

The Genesis port is has a lower resolution, less scenery. I've played it enough to see all of the content afaik, including the Afterburner jet flying over and the ending screen where the girl is facing the camera, there's also another sega cameo I think it's been a couple years, and I wouldn't really fault someone for not wanting to play it when the arcade version will run on the same computer

>>4778854
I haven't ever measured it but the wheels skidding when you shift can be avoided by shifting earlier and you start accelerating immediately then so I believe it is faster. You can also use this to maintain a higher speed through a corner if you're approaching it in low by accelerating until you're in the range where the wheels will skid and then shifting right before you turn, you'll remain at that speed through the corner and then be accelerating by the time you exit it. Generally you should be trying to always stay in high though, that's more important than shifting techniques.

*shrug* it's not that bad. The game does look like a mobile phone title visually, but it is colourful and does move at 60fps. It also has the Japanese and US track layouts and a mode with rivals. As well as re-arranged and original soundtracks. It plays faithful to the original game.
