Hey what's up /vr/. I need help with buying a Sega Saturn, not sure if I should buy a Japanese or USA Saturn. I guess my main focus would be playing imports since the USA Saturn games are at ridiculous prices now. I know you could use the Action Replay Plus for the USA Saturn but can you also use it for the JPN Saturn? Also I've noticed that some of the imports I'm interested in such as X-Men Vs. Street Fighter needs the 4MB expansion and I've read people running into problems with the game while using the Action Replay. Thanks in advance for all the help /vr/

action replay causes incompatibility problems or the game detects it and is basically telling you to go fuck yourself. hard to say. quite a few games (on various platforms, going all the way back to the c64) can detect AR easily and make your life difficult.

indeed. since every saturn game is ripped and online at your favourite gaming site, why fucking bother paying insane prices for mostly shitware? there are just not enough decent titles on saturn to justify buying and collecting them.

Mod an Action Replay cart with Pseudo Saturn for other region games and burnt discs. IIRC neither the AR and the Pseudo Saturn mod supports ingame saving so get whichever region has the games you would want to use an official memory cartridge on, as you obviously can't use both an AR or a memory cart at the same time. Also keep in mind a select few 1MB RAM expansion games(all Neo Geo ports) will not play correctly with the AR or real 4MB RAM cart, but they aren't amazing ports anyway.

And I forgot to mention the decent port of The King of Fighters '95 along with a shitty Ultraman game which require a dedicated ROM cartridge to play, so you will require a Japanese Saturn to play either of these, if you would ever want to.

Does every other game work okay with the AR RAM expansion? I only really want to play Darkstalkers 3 Alpha Zero 3 and Dungeons and Dragons.

You need to get a US Saturn to play all those great US exclusives that require RAM cards or even ROM cards. lol I don't think I've ever run across a game I couldn't play on a Jap Saturn. There are a couple of the 10 PAL exclusives that have minor issues. Not sure if a hz mod fixes that as I never gave enough of a shit to try.

OP here, thanks again for all the replies, I'll probably just end up getting a JPN Saturn since I'm more interested in getting imports anyways, I want a collection so I'm not interested in modding or burning games and I'm into what >>4764917 is saying about saving games since I care somewhat about high scores. By the way I'm mostly interested in fighting and rhythm games so reccomendations would be well appreciated. Does the action replay plus and the official backup memory / memory card work with all regions? What are the must have games?
