That's great box art.
Here's one I really love. It's really memorable. Instead of any of the heroes or a heroic landscape or even a sexy lady, Lands of Lore's cover focuses on its villain who is a vicious hag.
It comes from a wonderful time in computer and video roleplaying, but I don't think any other cover takes that tact; before or since.

I was always partial to box art that had a lot going on, especially loads of gross or spooky monsters. I never had the pleasure of playing the game, but I remember being captivated by this picture in a games magazine. In game graphics also looked cool.

I didn't like this one in the game store as a kid. Her one bug eye was scary! Having the one finger in the mouth of the throne lion is causing me a bit of weird anxiety even now.
I get frustrated over "dead man walking" syndrome and don't have the time or patience for proper grinding anymore. Should I still give Lands of Lore a go?

Atari hired some high quality painters to make box art for their games. I wouldn't be surprised if they hired people that made movie posters,

Found this one recently and it immediately clicked with me. I love the recruitment system and managing resources to build weapons for your troops. The rts parts are flawed and can be exploited but the battles are still fun. Diplomacy is also flawed and very basic but when you are trying to eliminate the other players diplomacy can be thrown out the window in a game like this. Also the box art just badass too.

Atari VCS box artwork actually did include a lot of elements from the game in the box art itself.

This Raiders of the Lost Ark box art features scenes from the game. It also shows a legend on the bottom of the box showing all of the items that the player can collect in the game.

The artist was probably using an image of Marina Sirtis as a reference when painting the Phantasy Star II cover. Not uncommon for videogame covers to steam from pop culture like that.

I'll post some more, I've started a VG box art collection over 3 PCs so far and never bothered to transfer them from one to the other

Nice find. Apogee was pretty well known for "borrowing" other peoples art assets and modifying the hell out of them.

Also unrelated, Duke Nukem 3D boxart is really well painted.

Yeah, Gradius II never got a US release because of a memory mapper chip it uses.

No way! The Breath of Fire box artist seems to be able to draw hands and understands how forced perspective works. Personally, I don;t think it is that bad for westernized box art. It is going for that '90s extreme comic book style.
