Mexican Club Nintendo, shit was cash until late 2005 but after that it went down the toilet even more when they cut the Nintendo Power section.
They had to fill the void making shitty sections where they talked about shit that nobody wanted to read, now days is barely surviving as a crappy Nintendo fan site.

I think it was GameFan, I only subscribed to Playstation Magazine and later on Dreamcast Magazine.

It was 6th gen, but I hope some other Ausfags remember Total Gamer.

It began as a more-or-less honest gaming publication that turned into vaguely video game related shitposting as the issues went on.
The writers must have had a field day sneaking in material that was completely inappropriate for children; I remember they once made fun of an artist who formerly worked in their office and had moved on appearing in breast enlargement advertisements.

Gamepro, used to have a bunch in a box in the closet, but seem to have all been lost. Grew up poor as hell, would maybe get a game for christmas or birthdays, so the reviews and such were sometimes about as close as I would be getting to the popular games of the year. still remember some of the codes and secrets, but can't remember anything about the actual reviews or anything. Seemed like the standard 90's Cool Dude style stuff, also remember they were kinda shitty about extras like demo disks, posters or anything.

I've never subscribed to anything like that before. Aside from maybe learning about new releases, I didn't see much of a point to gaming periodicals. Usually you'd hear about a new game via word of mouth, or it would eventually show up at the rental stores. Once the Internet became more accessible to me, I could learn about any game or series I wanted.

As for reviews, that's all very subjective. I've found myself enjoying a lot of games that were thoroughly trashed by reviewers, and didn't care as much for some of the more critically acclaimed ones. I've always relied on a try-and-buy mindset.

I subbed to Nintendo Power since it was basically free when you ordered the players guide promotion of whatever game you wanted to get the guide for instead of purchasing it in store, or as a way to get a gaming t-shirt and 12 free magazines.

I also subbed to PSM because it was so cheap, literally $6 a year or something like that, I was subscribed to a magazine Top Deck which went under and the rest of my sub was Next Gen which was awesome but also went under that same year and started receiving PSM, it was dirt cheap to sub for another year (like $6) so even though the magazine was shit I subbed for a few years.

Finally EGM was the only magazine I truly loved but when I stopped gaming in my teenage years I let my sub expire. But I kept finding links online to re-sub for a year for free so I ended up receiving the magazine for another 5 years for free, I have no idea how I managed it, because I wasn't even trying to scam them, I remember it was literally one click and I was renewed for free for years.

EGM/EGM2 (Expert Gamer) were usually the best, although EGM2 had really bad editing/proofing.

Game Informer was hit or miss. PC Gamer was usually good but kind of dry. Tips and Tricks was sort of fun to flip through but not worth the time and money.

Nintendo Power was fun and nice to look at, but it didn't have a ton of depth.

GamePro and GameFan sucked. They were like the Huntz ketchup of gaming magazines.

Some stores had "kiosks" you could try, but you could only play what they already had in the system.

You're telling me stores where you are opened every game to let you try them then took them back if you didnt want it after? sound nice for the consumer, dumb for the store

visited an older cousin that had issues of GF on his shelf as a kid. the page layouts, constant coverage of interesting looking imports, their anime segment, and those catalogues of anime/manga merchandise at the back of the magazines won me over (when DB was growing to become a thing, no one believed me when i told them Goku was gonna "dye" his hair yellow till i bought it over way back then).

it wasn't until years after they shut down i came to realized just how bad the writing was in their first few years of publications. their last few years was when they got their shit together under Eric Mylonas.

eventually moved on to Game Players, then to PSM, with EGM2 / eXpert Gamer when there's a game i need help in it.

Probably April, may, or June of 1996. I remember the editor( I think it was dan shu at the time) saying nothing will change In fact things would get better, with added content and the prestige of being a Ziff-Davis published mag. Instead they changed from magazine paper that has some durability, to flimsy catalogue paper that ripped way to easily. Then they began eliminating the tips and tricks section and the overseas section. And like you said the ads just increased.

I looked it up earlier. The final Sendai issue is EGM 83,June 96. Issue 84 is Ziff Davis. The flimsy paper trend started even earlier, together with the overall smaller format.
