Pre-Adventure Sonic had this surreal quality to it. The art design and music always made it seem that way.

This. The pop songs in Sonic always were sublimely strange, and the whole thing was purposefully weird, especially in the first game. It should never have become furry shonen, especially since it was the unique weirdness that made Sonic popular int he first place.
