Contra without the 30 lives code.
It's reputation as a hard game is a bit overblown.

I beat it for the first time recently just playing a game or two a day for about a week or so and managed to beat it. All the enemy placement and boss patterns are very easy to memorise. Then if you enjoy it, you can try and beat it without continues, or move on to a harder game in the series.
