Let's have a thread for level design. Good, bad, whatever. Talk about any levels or maps from your favorite games.

Are any of the Super Metroid hacks worth playing? Such as Hyper Metroid?

Man, despite the hatedom I like Simon's Quest, but world design was balls to the wall idiotic.

Who thought that making a metroidvania map THIS horizontal was a good idea? We can look at ANY early metroidvania - Jet Set Willy, Montezuma's Revenge, Xanadu, Metroid - and they're always more or less square-shaped.

This game could've been much less annoying if the world was more square, which meant less backtracking.

I think it's an abstract representation of an area that actually isn't linear though, and the puzzle does kind of make use of it's structure

Hyper Metroid was fun. Fairly frustrating at times with long stretches between saves and being on the verge of death most of the time. I like all the color swaps on items/sprites, though. The escape was fucking bonkers. It's like, 20 minutes long. Once you get about halfway through the game, the difficulty levels out a bit as you have more ammo and health. The Phantoon fight is still a pain in the ass, though.

I also enjoyed Retroid. It's a remake of the original Metroid with the Super Metroid engine.

Would it have killed them to make it more vertically stacked, though?
Like, map of original Castlevania is less horizontal than CV2, and map layout is completely irrelevant to the gameplay in that one.

Castlevania is like a magical accident, they didn't even make it on purpose man

The reason I rarely play hacks of various platformers is because generally speaking it's just palette swaps and bullshit difficulty. Seems like Hyper Metroid is exactly this.

Would it fucking kill them to draw some new tiles and make an engaging difficulty curve.

Can't beat the classics

Classics?
You posted a map for a game that doesn't exist.

Oracle of Ages/Season is such a cool title concept. But the Japanese titles were "Nut" and "Fruit" of the Mysterious Tree.

A speculative 3rd title like "Oracle of Hours" only makes sense in English which ignores the significance of the logo graphic. And the resulting sexual innuendo of making an old man tree "nut" or waiting for the girl tree to grow up to receive her "cherry".
A third game would mean a third tree, genderless or other, that requires essences to produce something that is neither a nut or fruit, for story reasons to.
I floated the idea of a dead/diseased tree yielding a mushroom or some other fungus.

Super Metroid Redesign is my favorite and imo the way Super Metroid should be played.
And I mean this version: https://drewseph.zophar.net/
Its before it got all retarded.

The Rotation Hack's pretty interesting. http://forum.metroidconstruction.com/index.php/topic,3746.0.html
Sure, it's a one trick pony of a hack, but really fascinating to see how much the game is changed by simply turning the map on its side.

Golden Dawn, Dependence, and Eris are all pretty good and worth a try.
Stardust is well made, fun to play, but somewhat short and on the easy side (about on par with original SM).
Super Metroid Advent is one that I haven't played that far into yet, but so far it's been promising, with nice art design and direction, as well as level design. The totally revamped boss ordering in this one is quite refreshing to see.

Huh? When did it get retarded, and how?
I think it's that 2.1 final version that I've played.

The hell are you talking about? The Japanese titles were "Legend of Zelda: The Mysterious Nuts - Earth Chapter" and "Legend of Zelda: The Mysterious Nuts - Time-space Chapter". A third game would just have been called "Legend of Zelda: The Mysterious Nuts - (something else) Chapter" in Japan.
