I heard that the game has a big failure rate in the original hardware because the piece of shit the 32X was. Is this true?

>> No.4754469

Scrap the random level selector, redesign all the levels, design more enemies and place more enemies in levels.
Put it on Sega Saturn and add animated cutscenes done by the guys who did the Sonic CD intro and the Sonic anime OVAs.

Make it an actual game instead of a tech demo/co-op griefing simulator.
It's pretty fun though, if you didn't pay for it anyway.

>> No.4754658

Redesign all the level layouts, add actual enemies, put in a real ending. Basically what >>4754469 said.

Everything else there is fine, you could solve most of the issues with a good romhack but not enough people really give a shit about the game.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the one actual thing wrong with it which is how they make the characters thrown towards you to the point where you're looking at a giant red ball of pixels that takes up most of the screen.
I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. Everything else about the game was pretty cool.

Redesign all levels around the removal of the tether gimmick.
Release it on the Saturn.

Honestly? I don't know.
Something nobody's mentioned is how BROKEN Charmy Bee. You can fly through every stage and ignore the chain mechanic completely. Who thought that was a good idea? And if you're playing two-player mode there's no way he won't be on your team.

I think the game is fundamentally flawed. Art and music are great, but the rest of the game just doesn't work.

zones don't have enough content to have 5 acts and are extremely similar. they'd need to be redesigned and add more enemies like others said.
the zone bosses are nice but need tweaks to be more of a threat. i just watched a boss speedrun and i don't remember a 3rd of the bosses because they die so fast.

the big thing is if players want the tether gimmick or not. the game is based around it in theory but using cheats to play as a solo character makes the game a lot more fun.

Mario 64 is not Classic Mario in 3D, it's a collectathon spin-off that overtook the main series similar to how Persona overtook SMT. Mario 3D World on the other hand, is classic mario in 3D. Similarly, boost and adventure are not Classic Sonic translated into 3D, they're gotta-go-fast simulators with a sonic skin. It's just something totally different. There needs to be a Mario 3D World for sonic. A 3D game that that plays like the 2D games simply with an added dimension. A game with pinball physics and momentum. A game with actual platforming instead of homing attack spam and boost.

Crash Bandicoot is another good example: what made crash special was being the only 5th gen 3D Platformer designed like a 2D platformer, and was hardcore to boot. Imagine a Sonic game that played like a mix of crash and 3D world with momentum based pinball physics.

Nothing. Chaotix to me is like, this weird little experiment. The whole thing is a like dream. The random level select makes each run a kite different, the levels looking similar but different makes it feel like a weird dream where your never quite sure where you are, the lack of enemies makes it feel less urgent, and the tether mechanic stops you from blasting through the entire thing, like how in dreams you always feel weighed down.

The gameplay, music and ambience make it's an almost surreal experience. Is it a bad Sonic game? Yeah, that's why it's technically not a Sonic game. Is it perfect? Nah, never tried to be. Is it an amazing game? Yeah. If there had been an another 2D Sonic game after it, it wouldn't have the issue of being seen as a failed iteration of the series.

The Sonic fans here aren't the autistic fanbase you're used to on the other boards. The tethering seems to be universally disliked too. I genuienly curious, what trauma did you go through to provoke this kind of response?

On topic: I honestly don't know how to improve something so broken. Every once in a while the level design feels like it was made for the awful tethering concept, but for the most part it feels like an untested concept slapped into a Sonic game.

>> No.4765116

>>4764871
I like the tethering. It's a rough concept, sure. It suffers really badly because there's absolutely no stage design. Levels are straight up just slapped together. It's a total fucking mess.
The intro level is a bit fun and flows a fair bit, even if it still suffers a hell of a lot from the same issues as the rest of the game... and then the rest of the game is just an easy, relatively uninteresting ride.

as for the actual stages...
http://info.sonicretro.org/Category:Chaotix_level_maps
huge chunks of each level are literally copy-pasted with minor alterations each act
speed slider is probably the one stage with actual design, and there are still loads of issues with it
they just slammed it out the door because Sega was busy being retarded and rushing absolutely fucking everything for zero reason whatsoever (they were in an advantageous or competitive market position in the home market damn near everywhere but Japan, and their arcade incomes in Japan were crazy fucking high during that era with games like VF2 and Daytona, their rushing turned them from a serious competitor to a total joke within a year)

at least the special stages are pretty cool
needed some work, but they're well designed

>>4764848

Goddamn, you weren't kidding. Needs a romhack honestly, a remake would have to respect the original designs and there's no point doing that here. Only hack in existence for it is a Mighty reskin that came out in 2006, damn shame.

I saw a fangame demo where the idea was that...so old Sonic games have HUGE verticality and multiple paths, right? So how do you translate that to 3D?

You make it have HUGE horizontal space.

That's my feelings about the game.
Mesmerizing music and sonic-style surreal artwork helps too.
This game is like i dunno some vague remembering of some other, non-existent good and comfy game.
You should be in right mood to play Chaotix, because it's a boring and bad game. Some trance, sleepy mood.

Also only week ago or so I found out for myself that Mariko used this silly boss tune in Billy Hatcher. Someday I should play this game.
