why bother with the Saturn when you mostly had a handful of Sega Model 2 arcade ports, loads of 3D shit that looked and ran better on the Playstation, and a tiny handful of worthwhile exclusives, like Panzer Dragoon (which should have been the pack-in, considering it had miles better graphics than anything else on the machine at launch)
Just getting something, anything out for people to play was important. There are like 250 games released in the US on the machine. There were over 1200 releases in Japan.

DC rolled around, he was all in on that, but Sega was fucked by that point. The DC's launch was absurdly successful, but Sega was in a death spiral.

Because I thought you meant it took away exclusives that they bought a previous system in the first place for given your “backstabbed” statement. Meanwhile Sonic was re-released on the Genesis/MD itself via TWO different compilations which featured other games, yet AGAIN on the Saturn along with the other main Sonic titles (and now with extras), and we can’t leave out Virtua Racing in this comparison:

My point here is simple: Nintendo isn’t the best company out there, but they’re FAR from the worst too. I can NEVER call Nintendo straight up good over their shitty attitude towards fangames and even youtube videos of their stuff (now THERE’S a big one you left out), but they were also the last holdouts on bigger things like paid online play, never followed gaming trends too closely (excluding Amiibos), and have kept old IPs alive better than any of their competitors (even if that’s not saying much).

Nintendo of Japan (NCL) itself had censorship guidelines that were the strictest out of all first parties. It related to obscenely violent/sexual content, and sometimes extended to publisher blacklists known for that (elf could not directly publish on SNES).
You could not show bare titties and gore on the super famicom on the super fami but could on NEC and Sega's, besides the PC-98 computers of course. You could not even mention in text certain subjects like rape and incest.

They tried to kill 2D games to promote 3D early on, were a bit cheap on the build quality for their console, and launched their 3D FOCUSED CONSOLE with a controller lacking an analogue stick, but, uh... you might be right. I don’t really know much about Sony as a company in general because it never interested me too much since I’m a 3rd/4th gen fag first and foremost, but on the surface they seemed to have had things altogether and more focused compared to SEGA and Nintendo at the time. They didn’t really start making missteps until the next gen, and even then nothing major until the 7th. Paid online in that time period was more forgivable since the technology was still developing. Keep in mind that dial-up was the norm then, and that high speed was more expensive then than it is now.
