I love this game, but the textures are so ugly. I can't understand why they made Black Cat, Mary Jane and every single character (but Venom) look so ugly.

Just imagine how amazing it would look if they went with good painted textures like Dr Slump and mimicked Ditko or Romita's art.

It's not like the game was released in the '50s. What's considered PG or 'family-friendly' tends to get more lax with each generation. Family sitcoms used innuendo all the time. The writers and the FCC just assumed it would go over kids' heads.

There was nonetheless a strong peak of censorship back in the '90s with the founding of the ESRB and other ratings boards pushing some rather reactionary policies to appease religious groups. Nintendo especially censored tons of shit. But nowadays, developers can get away with just about anything. The only consideration is whether or not being slapped with a T or M rating is going to hurt a game's sales. This may certainly be true for Nintendo exclusives, but games for just about any other platform will liberally toss around innuendos, strong language and gore.
