what is the deal with this game? Is it a true Swan song for the Saturn?

Or is it similar to Sapphire on PC Engine, an overhyped game due to extreme rarity?

>> No.4743660

It has one of the worst sewer levels in all of video games.

Otherwise, it's legitimately good. It cuts out a lot of the town exploring, melodrama, and other bloat of traditional JRPGs, so you may not feel similar if you're into that stuff. I much prefer it's focus on battles and lore/worldbuilding to something like Final Fantasy the retro Breath of Fires.

>>4743641
why would anyone care about rarity when its so damn easy to run backups on saturn?

>> No.4743702

It's really really good but it's also easy to poke holes in since similar to vagrant story its reach exceeded its grasp

The rarity does help it gain some fame, but it's pretty well deserving. Very innovative and fun battle system, nice story, wonderful graphics and sound.

I went into it with moderate expectations and it's extremely well put together, but I preferred Shining Force III trilogy overall.

It's actually a great game.

It's a really good JRPG.

Saturn's Sapphire is Burning Rangers.

Because back in the day Saga was propped up as the rare game for Saturn and $300 was the "jaw-dropping" price it was going for second-hand. This was back before there were easy options to run Saturn backups.

>> No.4744810

>>4743641
No. It's just rare and overhyped by its owners in hopes they'll get a ton of money off ebay from it. At best it's just an alright JRPG.

You don't need to hype a good game that only sold 20,000 copies where the source code was lost forever. Good luck ever seeing the price of this drop.

>> No.4745208

>>4743812
Burning Rangers is trash once you remove the "omg 3d transparency!!!11!" factor. The framerate is low, polygon clipping is out of control, and the camera movement is typical sonic team tier trash that makes the game very annoying to play.

>> No.4745453

The models and the animations for the characters, especially in the cutscenes, are pretty meh, but I think it's one of the first fully voiced RPGs (even though it wasn't translated)? The combat system is pretty nice, even though it favours clearing enemies quickly over anythign else, and at least the game is short for an RPG.

>what is the deal with this game?
It's an extremely good JRPG without 90% of the cliches that ruin the genre. Easily fits in a top 10 of the entire genre.
>>4744810
No, it's legitimately rare because not many copies were printed.

The Panzer Dragoon games have a strange mishmashed language. Some of the words here and there are Japanese, but the rest is gibberish.

Saga only has some parts in Panzerese, most of the game is in Japanese.

The framerate is okay. The clipping is awful, yeah. The camera movement is okay for a 1997 release.
and ultimately, the graphics are actually a lot nicer than most other things on the machine, barring just how much shit fucking flickers
unlike the vast majority of 3D Saturn games, it has light-sourced gouraud shading (since the Saturn didn't actually calculate lightsourcing in hardware, although it could draw the vertex colors to do it if you calculated it yourself in software)
Controls a little rough, but it's still a decent game.
the real problem is that it's four fucking levels long

like, Sonic R is better visually (open map, rock-solid visuals with very little flicker or jitter, smooth fade-ins, decent draw distance, better overall framerate), but that's the one game I can think of that looks better off hand and it's just flat out the best looking 3D game on the machine

true, holy shit

>> No.4751678

For real, what there is of Panzer Dragoon Saga is amazing, but it's too short and there aren't enough places to go or things to do. It's typical Sega output, an unfinished symphony.

Probably for the best, not counting Kojima games most Japanese video games had absolutely terrible English voice acting before the 6th gen. Plus it fits with the general tone of the game.

That's one of the greatest things about it. It doesn't meander on for 80+ hours where 90% of that is grinding. Get in, get out.

>> No.4752884

>>4751902
I didn't say it should be 80+ hours long and full on grinding. But it just doesn't have enough content. There's only a few locations and a handful of NPCs to talk to. I realise it's set in a dying world, but the overall effect is very sparse and empty. Just imagine how amazing it would have been if you could actually have visited the Imperial City for example, instead of a nomad settlement with two tents.

It's a very good RPG with an interesting and unique world, a good story, an interesting and original combat system, good music, and very little excess fluff.

It's not something worth like $600 or something ridiculous like that. But, it remains an exceptionally good example of its genre to this day.

>It's not something worth like $600 or something ridiculous like that. But, it remains an exceptionally good example of its genre to this day.
It is actually one of the games in that price range worth that money though. Low distribution and lost source code.

It's not something laughably overpriced like Chrono Trigger that's $250 despite selling 200,000 copies AND being re-released.

It’s really good but not $500 good. Blame Bernie Stolar for only printing 20k copies.
