how did sega get away with this?

>> No.4739326

Fuck man. Even the PSX could do better.

Looks good for a Sega Genesis port

>> No.4739362

They didn't. The Saturn failed, and it basically torpedo'd the entire company.

>> No.4739370

The game was rushed out the door for a Christmas release, like a bunch of other early Saturn games. The Japanese port was a lot better.

>> No.4739372

The Saturn wasn’t even intended as a 3D console. They then saw the PlayStation and tacked shit on at the last minute.

>> No.4739385

>>4739372
It was always intended to be a 3D console.
All the Playstation pushed them to do was add a second video processor, to improve 3D texture mapping, and boost the 2D capabilities.

they didn't

>> No.4739412

The company crashed and burned

>> No.4739440

They didn't, really. They pushed it out the door before it was ready to sell some Saturns then released a finished version in the form of Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition a while later. That was a definite improvement but still nowhere near Arcade quality, the Saturn just didn't have it in it to do the game justice.

>> No.4739468

>>4739440
>the Saturn just didn't have it in it to do the game justice.
I here ya but megadrive had a pretty nice port of virtua racing and the later release of Sega Rally Championship showed that 30fps was possible. I heard the Championship Circuit runs off modified Sega Rally but plays too slow and controls like shit.

If they hadn't of rushed it, could they have achieved a solid 30fps with slightly better draw distance?

>> No.4739658

>>4739326

The Same developer made Burning Road for the PS1 as well, which is a Daytona USA clone....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUt9XVXO5Ts

And Daytona CCE on the Saturn does run at 30fps with a better draw distance than the first Daytona game. It does fix many of the issues, but also changes the game with different handling and physics.

>> No.4739808

The saturn was too good to ever appeal to plebs which was an economic misstep. ON the other hand if you're a life long videogame liker it's one of the best consoles around with some of the most fun games you can find.

I find it funny that even on a board dedicated to old games, there are still graphics whores whining that things didn't look how they wished.

>> No.4739939

>>4739874
There's a big difference between being a graphics whore and noticing that the port is a load of shit. I'm not a stickler for graphics, however I do care when a game gets a shit port to a machine that's capable of running it better than it does.

>> No.4739945

The Saturn has to be the only console that people are in no rush to properly emulate. The scene is abysmal. How damning is that?

>> No.4739951

I didn't think it was nearly that bad and still had a ton of fun with it. I probably played Ridge Racer more overall but it wasn't because I thought that was a garbage port.

I get not seeing it as a bad port at the time, but you can't look at that video and think it's a fair port - surely?

I look at it and see it how I remember seeing it then, not arcade perfect but still great for an at home experience and the controls were solid. That's really all I cared about then.

I had long been used to home versions paling in comparison to arcades though so maybe expectations play a role.

Only about a 5th of games don't work

For those, I guess there is little effort pushed into it

how? they knew people would buy it because the title was popular in the arcades. when it was released and people played it, it got nothing but hate. nobody liked it. it was a half assed port. the only thing they got right was including most (not all) of the original music as cd audio tracks.

>>4739362
of course it failed, it was a pile of shit. the only people that like it a weeaboos that only discovered it yesterday.

probably not. you'd still struggle to get a solid 30fps out this lump of shit even with all the time in the world dedicated to development. saturn's hardware just wasn't built for this shit, as much as some here would have wished it was.

Daytona Never got a perfect port until the ps3/360 releasesThe arcade remake in 2017 which runs on pc hardware via win 7 is great too

This just in, conversion is limited by the hardware.

Do you cunts want to shit on Sega Rally because the Saturn couldn't do transparency next? Jesus fuck you idiots, guess what? Game comes out in arcade, people want a home version. How about Bubble Bobble? How many home versions looked a lot worse than the arcade? Shall we keep going? Talk about Streetfighter 2 for the C64?

They didn't. The poor performance of the launch games is one of the several compounding factors that fucked the Saturn over.

Daytona's port was rushed as shit and was made with the garbage toolchain they had when they were starting out with the machine.
Compare Sega Rally on Saturn, made when Sega had finally gotten some proper development tools going for the Saturn. Still a bit rushed, but it's good.
Or hell, Virtua Fighter 1 and Virtua Fighter 2 on Saturn -- the former is practically a joke, with polygons popping and flickering everywhere, the latter runs at a full 480i, keeps 60fps, and looks great.
