The flying in this game has always been tedious and impossible for me to master. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but it always felt like such a badly designed mechanic.

For such a great game, making the last level an auto-scrolling memorization excercise was kinda lame.

I think you're right, which is why it shows up so infrequently. Think about SMW, you have all sorts of opportunities to fly all the time. In SM64? One specialized, somewhat hidden flying level, and otherwise a rare star here or there.

Same. I hate doing the first couple of stars on Shifting Sand Land because of it.

Chandelier puzzle is illogical. Also the cavern section makes no sense, Lester and the player really have no motivation to go down there when the Palace is open to explore.

I've never been into speedrunning, but they sure seem to be having fun.

I wonder if he had the balls to do this jump

>> No.4739723

>>4739101
I played star fox 64 a bunch so the flying felt really natural, and descending to gain speed to be able to maintain altitude made sense. The only thing that sucked was that you had to find a cannon to really take advantage of it. I hated how fragile the turtle shell was.
>over lava or quick sand
>mistime jump by a hair
>get knocked off shell into the hazard
Then having to backtrack on foot to try and get a new one. Was a ton of fun still, I spent hours doing laps around levels to see how long I could keep it going.

>>4739101
Wall jumping in Super Metroid. Not the wall jumping itself, but the tall pits where you have to land like 7 or 8 back to back. I always manage to miss the last jump because I let my guard down upon seeing the end.

Yea I remember the wall jumping giving me fits, but once you get it, like really understand how it works then you can do it with your eyes closed.

I could never get past that one super-long jump without using magic, I know it's possible without magic but it sure as fuck isn't worth the grief of trying. That part and the labyrinth kind of crossed over from "challenging" to "anti-fun" a couple times if you ask me

did you know that the 2D gameplay was actually considered unacceptably dated at the time and the 3D was a praised aspect of the game at the time BECAUSE it was 3D?
That's why just fyi.
It was also cream of the crop FMV when it was made in 96.

I can't remember in detail because I only played it once, but there are 2 parts in Grim Fandango that left me utterly confused. One part in the office before the car sequence, another in the island tower involving a birdcage. No obvious correlation for the items you needed to use, just try everything in your inventory and see what happens. It seems like you'd need to have some special type of autism to figure it out or just brute force it. Everything else is almost babby tier puzzle solving.

I wish Ocarina of Time had enemies in the field besides just Peahats and Stalchilds as a kid and Poes as an adult. There should have been something similar to the soldiers in ALTTP or Moblins from Zelda 1. That's my only complaint about the game that they didn't fix in OOT3D.

>> No.4742126

Does Mario Kart 64 not display a trophy or some other icon if you've already beaten a cup? I think every other game in the series does that, but currently I'm not seeing any progress markers on my game.

If that's normal, then I'm counting that.

>> No.4742162

>>4742012
That and more towns and beam sword and toggling between auto jumps/manual jumps would've fixed the game.

>> No.4742169

>>4742162
I'd want the sword beam for sure, but I could take or leave the auto jump.

But extra town is a wild card that could either enhance the game, add nothing to it, or take away from it, depending on how it's done. Personally I can't see any need for another major village, especially when the game isn't even that big.

I didn't comprehend the power of calculators at the time so I mostly relied on Ramza (who was a double punch monk ninja) and Orlandu the most OP character in any Final Fantasy game. Flying isn't so bad once you accept that you're going to slowly lose altitude no matter what you do, so constantly angling yourself upward in a vain attempt to stay up high is only hurting you. With that said, still not one of the more fun activities in the game.
