Low-effort, low-asset quick knock-up and ship-it games because the dev wanted to get something out.

In other words, games that probably took weeks to make.

Kula World was good though.

yes it was good. this isn't about bad games it was about games that were quick and easy to make.

>this game doesn't conform to what i consider to be a high-production value
>therefore they must have done it in weeks

Maybe they spent months on those fruit sprites, man.

Nah, trust me.. I've been developing games since the 80's and I can tell you the only hard thing about making Kula World would be a bit of math for switching gravity. Everything else is literally a 6-8 week project, and that's why it was probably made.

Kula World /is/ a good game, but there's no denying that it's also low-effort. I guess my interest is in low-effort games that were also fun if that makes sense.

I feel like blast chamber fits in that category. It has enough effort to be fun, but it doesnt look like a ton of effort was put into it. A basic game based on m.c. escher paintings. Kinda a precursor to echochrome, but without the in depth puzzle aspect. I still love the game though.

Designing good levels for puzzle games like this seems like something that would be very time consuming

This. People should not forget the game part of video games, making up rules and getting down how the player is supposed to interact with the world, and having it come out well, would surely take a long time.

Just one tileset, simple photographic backgrounds, a couple of enemies with only a few frames of animation. Most work probably went into the main character sprite set and physics programming.

Somebody post that quote from Master of Doom about how Romero etc were averaging several games PER MONTH before they founded id software.

Ha, this is the truth. So many Atari games were made in just one month of production.

One of my mates growing up had Kula World and must have hated it because he balked at the idea of me wanting to give it a go.

Fallout 2, pretty sure they reused some of the assets.
