I'm 26 and I didn't grow up with a Mega Drive or a Super Nintendo. It blows my fucking mind that people compare them to each other. I've played all of the "essential" Mega Drive games like Golden Axe Warrior, Altered Beast, Vectorman, Sonic, etc. and I literally cannot fathom how people can possibly think this console competes with the Super Nintendo. The reason I included my age in this post is because I played these games around age 17 and later, when I got a job and could afford to buy retro games. I didn't grow up with them, and I have no nostalgia for them. These are my honest, unbiased thoughts as an "outsider"
Obviously there are good games on the Mega Drive, like Comix Zone, Phantasy Star, and Shining Force, but to compare its library to the SNES is fucking ludicrous. Most of the games feel cheaply made, and sound/look/control like shit, or they feel like direct knock-offs of Nintendo games. That's not to say that Nintendo didn't copy Sega sometimes (3D World Runner is an obvious Space Harrier clone) but the fact is that Nintendo made better games. I'm trying really hard to be objective here, but the gap in quality between the MD and the SNES is so great. I'm not even talking about "muh Mario and Zelda" or anything like that. The SNES was just a better fucking console with a better library.
I feel like comparing them is some kind of joke that I'm not in on.

Threadly reminder that if you weren't a Segatendo idort growing up, you only had half a childhood.

>> No.4737491

The whole "Sega used to be great" thing comes from nostalgia blindness. Nothings else. Kids grew up with the Genesis and don't want to admit that their childhood was awful.
There's a reason Sega failed and Nintendo is still around. There's a reason Sega now develops software for Nintendo lmao

>> No.4737494

There were a greater amount of good 2-player co-op arcade style and rental games on the Genesis than on SNES and an arguably better sound drive. A lot of the games had noticeably edgier marketing at the time. Otherwise, you're right.

The Genesis has farty synths and those hollow metallic-sounding basslines. The SNES sounded way better to me, but that's just my personal preference.

Genesis games can do way more than 64 colors on screen (from a pool of 1024 colors) and 95% of SNES games are stuck at 256x224 but people could argue semantics and other shit, so I'll let you know Genesis could push up to 320x448.

Funny thing I think the exactly opposite. Snes is good at making static images, and that's it. You see those action platformers that looked pretty on screenshots like Skyblazer but when you actually play those games you realize there's so little going on: Slow, with at most 2 enemies at the same time.

Nice thinly-veiled 25-year-late console wars thread. Remember to sage and report.

>> No.4737606

I grew up with both consoles. I played my Sega Genesis way more than my SNES. It just came down to my personal taste in what games I enjoyed playing at the time. As a kid, I was way more interested in games like Sonic, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, etc. If I was more into Mario and Final Fantasy, I probably would have spent more time playing my SNES.

>>4737504
Very few SNES games ran at 512x448, so that's a little misleading. Most of them ran at 256x224, which is marginally worse than most Genesis games.

>> No.4737610

>>4737487
You're obviously underage kid. There plenty of good exclusive titles for the Genesis/Mega Drive such as Splaterhouse 2 & 3. Some of the multiplat titles were also better on the Genesis than on SNES such as Mortal Kombat 1, Street Fighter 2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie, and Robocop vs Terminator. Genesis had more M rated titles than SNES did. So of course Sega was able to compete very well against Nintendo. So until you've explored Sega's entire library of games, you don't know what you're talking about.

Too bad boi, Mega Drive won the war.
SNES only started to sell more in 1995 when the war was over and SEGA already had Saturn.

I'm 34 and I agree with you. I had both consoles, although I got the SNES first. I was a huge fan of the NES and of course I loved the SNES as well. However, that doesn't mean the Genesis was a bad console. It's quite excellent, actually, with a ton of amazing games and hidden gems. Sure, it can't compare to the SNES, but I'll always love Sonic, Shining Force, Streets of Rage, Altered Beast, Beyond Oasis and Gunstar Heroes. I also feel like some games were better on the Genesis than the SNES. I was really fortunate to have both consoles as a kid.

I really wish I had got that Turbografx-16 as well, but maybe asking for 3 consoles was a bit greedy.

I agree,I had Genesis as a kid and it was meh games I would play only for a few minutes,I didn't even know the snes existed,Then I got a n64 amd psx and I saw the actual games that could get me hooked for hours,Later on life I played the snes with emulators and I was really pissed over what I loss.
Anyone with unbiased views can clearly see that the snes had better games which is the most important thing on a console

False. People with unbiased views can clearly see both consoles had it's upsides & downsides. There are many great games on both consoles & some games were better on one console than the other such as Robocop vs Terminator was better on Genesis/Mega Drive or Batman Returns is better on SNES. There's a reason why people love both consoles. Nintendo fanboys will bash Sega because of their add-ons & because they were a threat to Nintendo's dominance in the console market. Sega fanboys will bash Nintendo because of the shady shit they pulled during the early 90's such as censorship & suing galoob. So yes both sides has their flaws that people will criticize & to an extent I agree Sega shouldn't have done add ons & Nintendo shouldn't censor video games or sue galoob. Point being that it doesn't take a genius to realize both consoles are good & that you can enjoy both.

>> No.4737743

Nintendo and SEGA had very different strategies.

SEGA would release a bunch of B titles, while Nintendo would wait and release an A+.

So Nintendo had better games, but SEGA had more consitency.

>> No.4737746

>>4737487
You've played bad games mostly. I was a Sega kid and even I don't like Comix Zone or Vectorman.
Try the Sonic trilogy, Thunderforce 4, Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Knight Adventures, the Streets of Rage trilogy, Castle of Illusion, Contra: Hardcorps, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III, Road Rash 2, etc.

I love the Snes too, but as some anon said here, for action games it was kind of clumsy and slow. Also, be careful how you play the Mega Drive because bad emulation can kill the experience, specially the sound quality.

Genesis does have a lot of stinkers though. All systems do. But almost all systems have also had a bunch of good games and those are all that matters.

Choosing or thinking you should choose between the genesis and the snes is for fools.
