Galaxy Force II on Genesis is just way too much for the poor machine (sprite flicker everywhere), and the mechanics were kinda naff in the arcade (you better be going at full fucking throttle all the time or you'll never make it before fuel runs out, good luck not ramming into everything).
Not super terrible, but I'd certainly call it bad. It's impressive in the arcade for the graphics, which suffer a bunch at home. Music's still good though, if not nearly as brilliant as the arcade.

I got a Mega Drive in either 91 or 92 and it was supposed to come with Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Sonic the Hedgehog and something else. Probably Super Hang On or something. That was a deal they had going on in Australia around that time with Harvey Norman (a dept store).

Instead, they sold out of those games and I ended up with Altered Beast, Columns and Space Harrier 2. So to me, they are awful when I could have had Sonic the Hedgehog, and Alex the Kidd (which I never played until recently so it was kind of a mystery to me and I loved Miracle World).

Super Hang-On was pretty damn good on Genesis with the one problem that it ran a bit too slow even on NTSC machines compared to arcade. Like 10% slower.
I'd much rather have S1 and SHO than Altered Beast and Columns any day of the week.

I was around that age too and believe me, if you came from playing your Sinclair Spectrum games like me, Altered Beast for the Mega Drive was like watching an arcade game in your own home. Absolutely amazing and quite fun to play with 2 players.
Of course, if you were expecting Sonic, then of course it's disappointing.

Anyway, I doubt this Mega Drive Classic Collection is worth the money. I'm sure it won't have any good CRT filters or perfect sound emulation (which is mandatory for MD). When they surpass Kega, then it might be something to look forward to.

Yeah I know it has flaws. But it's completely excused since they are actual ports. I only really noticed slowdowns on Sonic 2, but I thought the rest ran fine.
I also didn't have problem with the sound effects, although it's annoying that music restarts after getting speedshoes or invincibility, but that's also understandable since it uses autio tracks from the CD.
But yeah as you said, it has time attack, as well as some other features, which makes that collection unique. The presentation is also really nice.
The emulation on those Genesis classic collections isn't worth paying for.
