I'm looking to get myself a Saturn since emulation is still shit 24 years on.
Any suggested models?
NTSC-U/C or NTSC-J?
Recommended peripherals?
I would look elsewhere, but there aren't really any in depth buying guides.
At least none as good as for getting a Genesis.

>> No.4735080

>>4734920
Yeah, it's definitely not gex. It's not even a platformer but I'm guessing you don't know that because you never passed the first level. Which bring us the the other difference. It's not a nintendo game designed for toddlers. Some parts took me 2-3 tries to get through and my kids, who are probably about your age, didn't come close in several tries. It's not horrible but it's not a great game and only gives you a few quatloos of hipster cred so certainly not worth investing the effort in playing for a casuallet.

>>4735005
All my Saturns are Japan/Asian because that's where I live and it was massive here so dirt cheap. I'd recommend those but shipping costs might make it not such a good deal. Light guns are a must have. Consider 3rd party ones that do PS as well. I also really love my HSS-0130 but again you'll get fucked on shipping costs and people want silly money for them now. A couple multi taps to play 10 player bomber man is a good idea if you have friends. So skip that? Same story with von sticks. An MPEG card to play that one game that requires it and is in a language you don't know.
There are a bunch of AR, save, rom carts that are useful/required for certain games. Someone was working on an all in one. If it ever go made it would probably be worth getting that instead of hunting for each piece on ebay.

>> No.4735127

>>4735080
I'm not too worried about cost, so long as it isn't outrageous.
10 player bomber man seems to be a good substitute to NBA Jam or SSB with friends.
Is copy protection an issue? Or will I have to buy legit copies of every game?
Do you know if NTSC-J models work in the US?

>> No.4735132

>>4735005
Get a jap Saturn as they are cheaper.
Get an Action Replay 4 Plus as it works as a ROM cartridge, region bypass and as a memory card. Get a pair of lightguns if you like the games. Get a 3D pad for the games that support it. If you like the Dreamcast controller, you'll enjoy the 3D controller.

First post ever on /vr/, sup /saturn/?

This is my collection, it's small but it's very dear to me. In 1995 I got my first job at 13 and after a year I had a pretty penny saved up. A tv commercial for nights convinced me the sega saturn was the console for me. My first one I ever bought and paid for myself. I've had xmen vs street fighter, castlevania and house of the dead since the late 90s. Everything else has been bought in the past 3 years. My goal is to get all the light gun games, and my next purchase will probably be advanced vg for important and I want another rpg (albert odyssey, guardian heroes) or burning rangers.

One childs outrageous is another mans spare change. You'll have to make your own call on that. Copy protection and region lock are both issues. The best solution is a good mod chip and and AR. Or potentially that multi function card. Legit copies of Jap games used to be an option but hipsters fled to the Saturn when babies discovered the NES so $1 games are now $50. Jap consoles work fine in the US. The PUS is actually rated for 125VAC.

They all work the same, so it will come down to your preferences. The NA gun is orange, the Euro gun is blue, and the Jap gun is Black.

Light gun games that I have: Death Crimson, Virtual Cop 1 and 2, Area 51, Scud, House of the Dead. Area 51 and Hotd are more expensive than the other 3, which are all 25$ or less.

AR is overrated, and breaks often. Get a normal Japanese memory cart instead. 4M RAM expansion is nice but only a few Capcom ports use it, and all of those have better ports on other systems (not to mention that you can perfectly emulate the arcade originals). SNK games need 1M carts; they glitch with 4M or AR carts.

If you use jap games and jap console, you have no need for region bypass.
The hss-0130 is shit. You need to mod it with custom buttons, but for that you have to destroy the front panel artwork.
Multitaps are only useful for 2-3 games. I think Bomberman and Death Tank Zwei are the only major ones.
MPEG card has no use whatsoever.
3d controller is bulky and there are no good games that use it in a worthwhile manner. Nights is the only one that comes close and only because it's a Sonic Team game so people go full autist over it. It's not that good of a game.

Also, a few games don't work with the 3d pad even in digital mode. Golden Axe for example. So just don't bother with it, it's not worth it.

I always loved the per character line color feature (you could have all 16 colors in a tile). Single-color sprites suck, but it wouldn't be so hopelessly bad if you were able to stack them without immediately just getting fucked by the 4 sprites/line limit, the thing supports 32 on screen. Plus, the color palette is really pleasant.
It has its good points.

I have. The only thing that controls "better" with it is walking around in towns. Which really doesn't matter because I just hold the dash button every time there to get to where I want faster, so the analog controls might as well not be there at all.
