Honestly, if slaughter is done right it can be pretty rewarding and fun. I just think of it as bullet hell, like touhou. It may looks daunting and annoying. But if it's done well like going down then it's extremely rewarding. It has to go beyond just circle strafe rocket launcher. The mapper has to add little gimmicks and objectives for you to do while dodging projectiles.

A good slaughtermap would need something to expedite the monster killing process because there's going to be so many fucking dudes. There's no weapon in the unmodded game powerful enough to do that, so infighting is logically the only weapon with the powerscale to do that. Mixing monster types enough that causing big infights is possible, and also having enough space to bob and weave to aggro more parts of the map without having to kill everyone in the previous part first. Needless to say slaughtershit does neither.

Doomseeker is bundled with Zandronum, which has its own community. They highly enjoy Complex+LCA, MM8BDM, Comhotel, and Brutal offshoots. Anything else is sparsely populated.

I tried to do so just now (using ZDL to assist with load order) and I just couldn't figure it out, because I tried with High Noon Drifter and it still was showing the vanilla hud and spawning a chainsaw instead of the boomerang.

I tried it both ways honestly since my last post.

One way I got the vanilla hud but was still using the HND weapons until I saw the chainsaw hadn't been replaced by the boomerange.

Is there a way to make items in doom unobtainable when they're behind a small slot wall, similar to Duke3d's? When I attempt to do webm related for doom, my character picks the item up before opening the door slot.

Speaking of hitscan vs projectile from last thread
Mostly bugfixes but they're pretty important. I also did a full 30 map Oblige run to see how well the mod plays under some of the worst gameplay conditions I can imagine and it made me want to fucking kill myself but it was not as bad as I thought, definitely pretty well balanced. Highlights:
- BFG nerfed but still ridiculously powerful
- PSMG works on maps with Voodoo dolls (previously had infinite ammo)
- Spectre ghosts are now silent to help differentiate them
Still looking to do a bit of a sound rework but sound is definitely one of my weaker points. I may also change the SMG sprite, but I dunno.

Well those are very very janky and somewhat rely on the player's perspective to not show a problem that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet at least for the player's tracers. Rockets with no self-damage is still a big deal, even if they're just blinding balls of light instead. I might agree with the shotgun if only because the katana is good when applicable, though it's still pretty consistent for what it is.

BTSXguy I feel is pretty average for the mod's standards. The powerup ball is a bit finicky depending on what kind of map you're on and he has his SSG equivalent either way too short or somewhat inconsistent to be useful over the stock one, but it does hit some sweetspots like 2HKO'ing an Archvile and that's incredibly useful if you can apply it. More often than not I found myself using the rocket launcher more often since it's consistent and safe.

Last time I used Plutguy, the BFG wasn't bad against regular enemies but it sucked at taking down boss monsters, everything else was good but that detail stuck out. I think that puts AAguy on top, whose entire kit is honestly just fantastic.

I think TNTguy's biggest problem by far is a lack of good burst damage that plenty of Doom maps might call for.

Nah it was a weird ZScript problem. Had to offload the regeneration code to a thinker singleton because apparently ammo pool is "global" but playerpawn scripts run per-pawn. I think there's a similar bug with the BFG that's more rare, but I'm not 100% sure. Still investigating.

There's always only been like 4/5 doom 1 shareware servers so they are easy to find if you organize by IWAD. Unfortunately the US servers have crap settings so I stick to the international ones despite the ping

I was gone for a few years. I used to hang around since to old [ldf] days. Then I hung around the [DX] clan because they were all good and used to just troll everyone.

Servers used to be crammed, but nowadays it's rare to find players. I think many of the other veterans do private servers with different aliases.

I'll give a brief rundown, don't expect this story to make any sense.

I was somewhere near a massive river in the middle of nowhere, I went down by the water and saw a huge boat and then suddenly felt myself being sucked under the water towards it. I couldn't fight it off but by the time I got onboard I found I had a humongous cannon and was up against a horde of Satyrs and I was thinking to myself how unfair the blast radius was against them, before thinking that Russian Overkill makes no sense in most levels and it's just for show. I also thought the huge area I killed them all in had no detail and wouldn't be interesting to play.

After I blew the hell out of all of the bad dudes in the hull I went upstairs, where a gang of bank robbers had stolen some jewels but one of them accidentally threw them in a garbage disposal and they were sifting through crap trying to find it, arguing amongst themselves.

Then my view cut to another robber, who was a sentient guinea pig, where he had in fact stolen the jewellery and got away in a miniature speed boat built for guinea pigs.

Then while getting away he got arrested by the police in their own mini speed boats and I got arrested for having a huge gun but released when they saw I helped capture the bad dudes.

I've gotten an annoying fixation on barrels now because I'm trying to justify why they're in my map. What do you think is in them and why do they explode? Don't say "nuclear waste" either because not only is it too obvious but nuclear waste doesn't entirely work that way...it's solid for a start.

Most stupid of all is that I know this doesn't matter, nobody will care when they play much less even notice but I am interested to hear what explanations people have had for them over the years. I'd prefer to see them as a mixture of things ranging from chemical waste left over from mining processes, to nasty secret ingredients from UAC to the demon's built them for some mcguffin reason.

Different guy, funny that it started like that for me with the Immoral Conduct thing.

Or rather, I was delighted to see it ported, but I didn't like the old cartoon M16, so made a quick and dirty replacement from other sprites. But I didn't like the grenade launcher so I made it just throw a hand grenade instead, and then I changed something else, and something more, etc, kept tweaking and redoing things.

Honestly if it works, I have no problem with it. If a ZScriptification is on the horizon (which is the plan at the moment), there's really no point in going through and trimming stuff. Besides, things look the way they do now for a reason. The only code I really have issues with is the shotgun, but that's because I had really no hand in doing that.

Brutal Doom has been bitched about to death on this forum, but what did annoy me was all the shit that was going on all the time that seemed like "noise", namely clanging bullet, shell casings, extra shit on the screen and imps made too much noise and their fireballs took up too much space

But yes, it's astoundingly visually noisy and the audio seems to constantly be competing to see which clip can drown the others out. The general rule for these kinds of things is that it's ok to add visual flair when it also conveys information, but Brutal Doom is such a mess of effects that most of the information is lost. Even if all sounds were lowered a bit and most effects made half as large the whole thing would be easier to look at.

Okay so I played some of Serious Sam 3 again because now it automatically installs alongside the unified version of TFE and TSE, and I made it halfway through the game this time, and man it still sucks so much. I can totally believe the rumor that Croteam was making a generic military shooter and just slapped a bunch of Serious Sam themed enemies into the maps when it got canceled.
