I don't know why the promo art from the N64/PS1 era really resonated with me while while I was more or less indifferent to the stuff made during sixth gen.

Probably pure nostalgia, since I got really into buying game magazines in that time period... though I really did like the hand drawn artwork from before too.

Also, I miss the yellow tint Mario used to have to his skin.

Although we still can't have realtime raytraced graphics, the games can look pretty close to this. Actually, (nonretro alert) Smash Bros Melee. with al those turbosmoothed trophies and plastic shine on characters and the (nonretro alert) Game Cube techdemo have a pretty similar style to old CGs.

Sadly, no. It seems that Nintendo does not like this game, as they never referenced it again and its sequel got cancelled.
Even the Pilotwings Smash Bros. stage only references the original SNES game and Pilotwings Resort, the 3DS Mii crap.

I forget where it started, but somebody on one side said that Rare Replay on Wii U was not entirely out of the question, that it'd be considered if there was enough demand, so there was a huge outcry of support from fans on twitter, so much so that both Nintendo and Rare addressed it, I believe Microsoft said it was up to Nintendo, or vice versa, I forget, then the other side said it was up to Rareware. And in the end, it was Rareware in the end that just said a flat out "no"

I mean I get it, the Wii U was a failed sytem, but it still hurt having that dangled in front of us and then just taken away like that. I'm not exactly holding out hope that things are different now that the current Nintendo console is actually successful either.

These renders usually use an algorithm called "Reyes" that subdivides and tessellates all the surfaces until they are smaller then pixels and then uses a specialized rasterizer to draw them.

Just remembering that those Mario 64 renderes were done by the same guy who drew Super Metroid, F-Zero and Zelda arts, Yusuke Nakano.
